TALES FROM THE HARDWARE STORE We had a bit of a giggle the other week when friend of ours and author of ‘Leg Before Wicket’, Colin Goodwin was interviewed by John Gillmore on BBC Radio Lancashire. Amongst many other interesting topics Colin was talking primarily about his book, and he mentioned to Gilly that the book was available to buy from The Hardware Store, but that it was kept ‘under the counter’. I thought I ought to point out to those of you who heard the interview and might have been concerned, the only reason it’s kept ‘under the counter’ is to keep it clean - honest! There’s nothing worse than a dog-eared book. Another friend and regular visitor of The Hardware Store has also written a book. Former road- racer Alan Carter has written an astonishingly frank autobiography, “Light in the Darkness” which tells of his own personal struggles and the tragic life of his brother, double British speedway champion and England No1. Kenny Carter. He also talks about his father Mal Carter, who incidentally sponsored Eric in the late 70’s when Eric rode for Halifax Dukes. The book has just been published. It is not for the faint-hearted but if you’re into road-racing or speedway or simply interested in how some people manage to cope when the most difficult circumstances are thrown their way, you really can’t afford to miss it. Since we got our copy last week I haven’t been able to put it down…how Alan can retain a sense of humour after living through such difficult, tragic times is amazing. Signed copies of the book will be available ‘under our counter’ very soon. Let me know if you’d like to reserve a copy. On the subject of writers, I had what can only be described as an unusual encounter a few years ago. I hadn’t been working in the shop for very long and Eric was out and there were 2 or 3 customers waiting when a man frantically ran up to the counter demanding a pen and paper….quickly! As I was in the middle of serving someone else I couldn’t attend to him straight away, and to be quite honest I found his manner rather alarming, and as I eventually passed him the pen and paper he looked at me with such disappointment in his eyes and said ‘Its gone now…it’s too late’ and walked sadly and slowly out of the shop. I was puzzled to say the least, but he later confided to me that he had found love late in life and often had an unexpected urge to write down his feelings in poetic verse. But he had to get down his thoughts on paper straight away otherwise they were lost forever. So if you are ever in this position yourself, please promise to carry a small notebook and pen with you at all times....just in case! Well, I’m so sorry to tell you that our supply of moth balls has now definitely dried up so we are currently looking for alternative products to deter cats from using your garden as a toilet. The biggest public enemy at the moment, however, appears to be SLUGS! Urgh, the word itself is enough to make me cringe. During this rather wet summer they are not only causing mayhem in the garden but are also wriggling their way inside our homes. If you’re affected, don’t feel so bad about it…many, many people are in the same position. The important thing to remember is that they can get in through the slightest hole or crack, so get any holes filled in and make it impossible for them to pay you a visit. Finally, The Hardware Store will be closed between Saturday 6th and Saturday 13th August for the summer holidays. We are off down to Dorset, but it does seem like everyone I speak to has either been or is going to Turkey this summer. Wherever you may find yourself this summer, have a wonderful time! Carol Broadbelt Ps – What makes you happy? As I get older I find myself appreciating the simple things in life, Since discovering avocados about 20 years ago I’ve put up with hit and miss quality, from all the various supermarkets – but not any more, after seeing their ad in the Local Herald I visited Shuttleworth Hall Farm Shop, and can now buy perfect avocados every week! Result!

5. Who runs the bar in The Simpsons?
The Lawn Mower. When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to do first, the shed, the boat, making beer.. Always something more important to me.
Finally she
thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her sitting in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house.. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I gave her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway." The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp.
