of the their lives trying to capture the grandeur of the local mountains on canvas and in the very culture of the place.
The collective interests of the Whytes and their passion for culture and philanthropy led them to develop the Whyte Museum in 1968.
Through the summer and into the fall, the Whyte Museum is featuring exhibitions that essentially embrace the original spirit of Robb and Whyte, including the Women Adventurers in the Rockies exhibition that runs until November 15, 2011. The presentation includes the intriguing possessions, photographs and interviews with 10 women - five women from the past
and five modern-day women: explorers, alpine guides, and climbers; natural scientists and intellectuals; one of the honoured matrons was a prison warden; some of them are artists, photographers, politicians, and activists. All have contributed to Banff culture in some form or another.
High Fashion in the Rockies is an introspective consideration and celebration of the Luxtons – one of Banff’s most well-known and influential families. This tribute honours the spirit, the vision and commitment, and the creative energy of this influential family. Artifacts and photographs of the Luxtons are featured, as well as video vignettes produced by The Banff Centre which reveal recollections of Stoney
elders and others who remember them. A collection of elaborate, period dresses that once belonged to Georgina and Eleanor Luxton, that were recently discovered still in vibrant form, including accessories, gloves, purses, smoking paraphernalia, and lingerie, are on display in the Heritage Gallery.
Banff Culture Days runs through August 5, 6 & 7, 2011. This event includes the Banff Culture Walk and Doors Open Banff, providing opportunity for visitors and locals to visit interesting historical and cultural attractions.
