Vancouver Island
paddlers can set off for a relaxed turn, around the sandstone bays of Newcastle Island Marine Provincial Park, or on a multi-day sea-going trek—north or south— through the pastoral Gulf Islands. Alberni Outpost rents kayaks and organizes guided kayak tours.
Mountain-bikers in the know recommend hitting the “Flow Show,” one of the dizzying single-track descents on Nanaimo’s cross-country Dumont Trails, where you can also ride the popular Yellow Gate and Monkeys in the Mist. Bike the “Abyss” along an earthquake fissure at the Extension Ridge trail loop. On Mount Benson’s Westwood Ridge, strategic ramps and jumps add air to forested trails with panoramic views.
