WHYTE MUSEUM OF THE CANADIAN

ROCKIES Contributed

In Banff there are more than 18 heritage homes, including the McGinn residence, Mary Schäffer’s residence, Tarry-a-while, Windy Cabin, and the Mather Cabin, all under stewardship of the Whyte Foundation. This year, these properties will factor into Doors Open Banff - an annual heritage tourism event, and Banff Culture Days - a celebration of art and culture in the mountain village.

The fact these 18 residences still exist is largely due to the efforts of Catharine Robb and Peter Whyte - founders of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. The couple met at the Boston Museum School of Fine Art in the late 1920s and eventually married. Soon after, they made Banff, and the Canadian mountains, their home. Given the majesty of their surroundings and the overall climate of industry and innovation that was prevalent at the time, within a year of relocating, they built an art studio where they would spend the remainder
