Calling All Leaders PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

T

his year marks the beginning of the Leadership Development Committee (replacing the

Nominations Committee) whose purpose is to recommend candidates for positions of officers and directors. It consists of the president, two past presidents, vice president, associate vice president, and two associates. Their job is to identify and recruit the future leaders of GHBA.

Identifying candidates can be as simple as just asking one of the members, but in some cases we will be proactive in our recruiting efforts. With this group

of candidates, someone is assigned to mentor each new recruit. We spend time with each candidate to discuss the time commitment and responsibilities of being a leader in GHBA. The committee is also responsible to detail in writing what each position’s responsibilities are so that the candidates will know in advance of being elected. Sometime later in the fall of each year, the Leadership Development Group will nominate a secretary and members of the board of directors.

To further assist the GHBA, the Leadership Development Committee (LDC) will

coordinate with the 16 committees, divisions and councils to write, as we say in the business, a “Scope of Work,” similar to that which the committee did. In turn each committee, division and council will identify candidates for their respective group just like the LDC did for the GHBA ladder. With proper planning, mentoring and being more proactive, we can ensure we have good people who can step in and do a great job. Nothing is worse than taking on a job without knowing what you will be doing. You will also learn about the time commitment and all your responsibilities. One of the good things with many of these groups is that we have a ladder system, so the first year you would be secretary, the next vice president and finally president (or chair). It gives you a chance to gain knowledge of how meetings are conducted, interactions with GHBA staff, and working with a budget.

You may ask, “How does this affect me?” Well first, we need members to contact us if they are interested in leading the GHBA, or one of its committees, divisions and councils. Even if you are not ready to jump in this year, it helps to know you are interested in being in a leadership position in the future. Sometimes you may start out being on one the boards of a division. We are always interested in volunteers for these important positions and all of our leaders come from members.
