John Norris is one of just two male Canadian athletes to represent Canada at WUCC, U23, and USAUC in the open division in 2010. This achievement required years of devoted training, and substantial personal and financial sacrifice in 2010. Not only did he earn the right to represent Canada in these three very notable capacities, but he overcame two fractures in the process, and personally excelled at all three venues, even leading
Team Canada as a captain to a gold-medal finish in Florence. His personal dedication and accomplishments in 2010 have been extraordinary among all the male players in Canada.
QUOTES “In Canada in 2010, John has played
more elite games than any other player, is a leader on any field he steps onto, making people want to learn from him, play with him and watch him. I support him as Male Athlete of the Year because he has dedicated himself to becoming the best player in the world, and play for the best team in the world, by constantly learning and training.” -Nick Menzies “This fall John’s dedication to the sport,
the team and his teammates was on full display as he played through a recently broken foot to lead Furious George to the USAU Championships in Sarasota, FL… When John isn’t focusing on his own game, he somehow finds enough time to volunteer as a coach for the Kitsilano high school Ultimate team. John also gives time to helping local recreation players develop their skills at summer clinics hosted by the VUL. It would be hard for anyone to match the contribution that John has given to Canadian Ultimate this year. ” –Morgan Hibbert

LETTER FROM JOHN NORRIS When I first saw Furious George play I
was 14 years old and I told my family and friends that one day I would play on that team. After playing on Furious for two years now and receiving this award, I can’t imagine accomplishing so much without the incredible support network around me. I’d like to thank coaches Jilian Maguire, Mike Firth, and Dave Knudsen, teammates and mentors Adam Silverstein, Rhett Vernon-Jarvis, Aaron Loach, Nick Menzies, Morgan Hibbert, Alex Davis and Andrew Lugsdin, the VUL, and most of all my friends and family for putting up with and supporting all of my efforts in Ultimate.
