SOME QUOTES ABOUT LORNE “I’ve only been coached by you for a season but I’ve learned more in thoses 6 months than I did in my ten years of playing. Thank you so much for everthing!”

“ Il inspire le respect, il est clairement un passionné d’Ultimate. Lorne est un fin “guide” contagieux !” Marie-Hélène (joueuse de Storm)

“Without a doubt, Storm would not enjoy the success it has enjoyed and is still enjoying (including a first ever qualification for USA Ultimate Championships in 2010) without Lorne. He is an integral part of the team, and all players who have played for him can attest to his commitment, his ability to get the best out of everyone and his extraordinary leadership skills. The success of Storm will always by intimately tied with the name Lorne Beckman. We all know it, and with this nomination, we hope to share this reality with the rest of the Ultimate community. He deserves the recognition”.

Yours truly,

LETTER FROM LORNE BECKMAN Thank you Ultimate Canada for selecting

me for the Coach of the Year award. I am quite surprised even to have

received a nomination—which must only have come from Storm—because I spent three years being awfully mean to them, marching them around to the beat of my drum, pushing them to the very limit, blowing a whistle in their ears, and telling them with a frown to “stop playing like girls”.

That said, if pride is a sin, then I shall

burn forever, because I am ever so proud of this award and even prouder to have been able to coach Storm. They say behind every great man is a great woman: In this case, there were twenty-three. Everyone trusted me and trusted each

other, knowing that pulling together in the same direction would be the best way to get somewhere. Yet following blindly has limits, so they also questioned every step, because knowing the answers would get everyone on the same page at a far deeper level. More than question me, they challenged me, which forced me to constantly reevaluate myself and my philosophies about how to play Ultimate. Of course, I was never afraid to order them around, but I was also unafraid to say, “I don’t know” or “That depends” when I was uncertain. In that atmosphere, we all learned a heck of a lot about so many things . . . and had a ton of fun doing it. Thank you again Ultimate Canada for

this award that is a defining moment to such a wonderful three years and a great 2010 season.
