Stop the revolving door and retain your employees

ow often do you find yourself thinking, “Why can’t I hold on to my employees? And why do the good ones leave
instead of the ones I wish would leave.” Some turnover is natural and healthy,
but high employee turnover can be a deadly blow to the success of a com- pany. Many business owners say that the revolving door syndrome is the one recurring workplace issue that keeps them awake at night. An inability to retain good employ-
ees is typically a symptom of poor hir- ing practices, poor employee relations practices and poor management prac- tices. For many fitness facility owners and managers this harsh reality may be hard to admit.

1. Hire for attitude and fit with the position, team and culture. 2. Treat employees respectfully, fairly and consistently. 3. Give employees autonomy and hold them accountable. If you hire right your employees will accept responsibility and do the right thing.
4. Build a culture of appreciation that provides immediate recognition. Personalize rewards and recognition since one size does not fit all.
5. Focus on non-monetary rewards. Be creative and resourceful. 6. Create a fun culture by building in time for socializing and fun. 7. Ensure managers make realistic promises and keep them. Do as you say, and say as you do. 8. Give employees the time, support and systems necessary to do their jobs well. 9. Be open, honest, transparent and consistent with your staff, and provide feedback. 10. Compensate competitively and fairly. If possible, structure a compensation and rewards program that is at the top end of the industry standard.
11. Provide opportunities for growth. Provide challenges, and offer training and professional development activities. 12. Demonstrate that you care about your employees and the community. Encourage life/work balance and service to others.
