Fine and dry outlook for Great Harwood Cricket Club The weather will no longer stop play at a Hyndburn cricket club, thanks to £18,500 grant from Biffaward, a multi-million pound environment fund managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts which uses landfill tax credits donated by Biffa Waste Services. Great Harwood Cricket Club will use the funding to carry out much needed repairs and refurbishment to their outfield pitch, which will prevent the facility from becoming waterlogged during bad weather. As one of only two sporting facilities in the area, the popular community facility currently attracts over 100 people a week that take part in a variety of activities, and immediate action was needed to ensure that these services could continue to be delivered. Stuart Maher, Club Secretary and Development Manager said: “The club are delighted to have received this funding from Biffaward, which will enable us to carry out the repairs and refurbishment that are so desperately needed to our playing service. The deterioration of this surface over the last 3-5 years has been a major concern, with an increasing number of matches and practice sessions being cancelled leading to disappointment for both our junior and senior teams. “As well as sustaining the future use of the facilities at the club, this funding will also enable us to strive towards our ambitious plans for growth, in encouraging more members of the local community to take part in sport as part of a healthy and active lifestyle.” The work on the outfield is due to be carried out later this year, resulting in a bright forecast for the year at the club, as the facility will be ready for use at the start of the new Summer season in April 2012. Once the work is completed, the Club, who are dedicated to providing the entire community with opportunities to become involved, will increase the number of cricket sessions available, as well as hold a variety of other sporting sessions, fundraising days, and community fairs and events.
