Revealing Rishton

The Rishton PROSPECTS Panel was formed in July 1996 and currently has an active membership of 20 of varying ages, gender and backgrounds, all keen to try to do something to improve the local environment and quality of life for the residents of Rishton in a sustainable way. Panel projects have included the development of a community garden, numerous plantings of spring bulbs, the creation of flower beds and shrubberies, litter picking and the tidying up of overgrown pathways. The local railway station has been 'adopted' and its surroundings enhanced to try to encourage more use of this public transport. Rishton train station is a two-platform station on the East Lancashire Line operated by Northern Rail. The current station in Station Road replaced the original station in 1852. Monday to Saturdays, there is an hourly service from Rishton towards Blackburn, Preston and Blackpool South, westbound and Burnley Central and Colne, eastbound. There is a two-hourly service in each direction on Sundays.

With a population of just over 7000 at the 2001 census, Rishton has produced quite a few celebrities over the years. Top class football- ers, Martin Dobson and Brett Ormerod hail from the town, but Rishton stands proud in Cricketing circles all over the world as it’s reputation in the Lancashire cricket league has attracted many world class players not least West Indian Legend Sir Viv Richards. Other sports are present in the town. Sailing has taken place on the Reservoir since the start of the 20th century, and the East Lancashire Sailing Club is a RYA training establishment. Rishton Golf Club is located off Petre Crescent and is a lovely 9 hole course, and there is a very healthy bowling club in Parker Street, which, incidentally is holding The Champions competition on 9th April.
