Big Ivy Big Ivy Book Club
By Nancy Dillingham Te Big Ivy Book Club will meet
Saturday (Jan. 22) at 10 am at Big Ivy Community Center to discuss Fannie Flagg’s novel “Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven.” Te story, trademark Fannie
Flagg, begins as Elner Shimfissle, an elderly lady, climbs a ladder to pick some figs to give to a neighbor. She falls off the ladder, “dies,” and goes to heaven, then comes back to earth again, not really having died at all, even though her demise had already been announced by two of her good friends at the local radio station. Te “plot” – summarized as
above – does not, of course, do jus- tice to the novel. With that whim- sical plot and her cast of eccentric characters, Flagg is going for much more here. She is going for the
heart. If you’ve read other books by
Flagg, most notably “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café” (from which was made a very successful movie) or “A Redbird Christmas,” a personal favorite of mine, you know that Flagg’s books offer up, in the words of one critic, healthy doses of “moral messages and homespun wit.” She even of- fers up, in this book, the recipe for “Dorothy’s Heavenly Caramel Cake,” which, by the way, plays a pivotal part in the plot. Could we ask for anything more? What happens when you die?
Flagg poses that question here. But perhaps the more important message she imparts is that how you live each day is what matters. Te book reminds me of Torn-
ton Wilder’s play “Our Town” (an- other favorite of mine) where the young girl, Emily, who has tragi-

AN OPEN-AND- SHUT CASE?
by Michael Creasman, CFP
It may seem like a good idea to close a credit card ac- count in order to avoid added
debt; however, doing so may have adverse consequences. To begin with, those with outstanding bal- ances on their credit cards will find that a card cancellation will change their “credit utilization rate,” the amount they have charged on their credit cards versus the total amount of available credit. For example, a cardholder with an outstanding balance of $2,000 and a combined limit of $10,000 has a utilization rate of 20%. By closing one account and maintaining the same $2,000 balance, the cardholder would see a rise in utilization rate. Because lenders favor low utilization rates, card cancellation would hurt in this case.
HINT: Credit utilization rate
makes up about 30 percent of a bor- rower’s credit score.
After the holiday season, many
people are receiving large credit card bills. If you plan to apply for a mort- gage or other loan, be aware that lenders prefer low utilization rates on these cards.
