By Matt Tate North Buncombe dropped its

second straight Mountain Athletic Conference game in a 70-62 home defeat against Reynolds on Tues- day (Jan. 18). Te BlackHawks raced through

the non-conference portion of their schedule, dropping only one game to Smoky Mountain, the No. 1 ranked team in Class 2-A. Conference play has been more

trying for the BlackHawks as they needed a rally to knock off McDow- ell earlier this season and dropped two straight against Asheville and the Rockets heading into a pivotal clash with undefeated and second- ranked Erwin on Wednesday (Jan. 19). Results were not known as of press time. Friday’s (Jan. 14) game against

the Cougars was the first for the BlackHawks in more than a week because of snow. Wednesday’s game was their third in five days. Against Reynolds, the No. 9

BlackHawks (13-3 overall, 3-2 MAC) were stymied for much of the first half by the Rockets’ de- fense until Sam Rector rattled off several 3-pointers to help the BlackHawks close the opening stanza on a 11-2 run and cut their deficit to 30-27.

on for Reynolds (9-5, 4-2) in the second half, leading all scorers with 30 points. Christian Bridges had 16 points

for the BlackHawks. Kevin Bailey and Rector each added 12 apiece.

In the girls’ game, Antwanet

Johnson coolly sunk four consecu- tive free throws to ice the Rockets’ 49-44 victory. Jayde Ledbetter led the Black-

Hawks (7-9 overall) with 15 points. Haley Higgins added 11 points.
