boy,” fiancée Marie Zarzycki re- marked. Higgins died at the age of 70
on Jan. 7 at Mission Hospitals surrounded by his family. He is survived by Zarzycki, three chil- dren and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The former Weaverville police chief spent his retirement years in Madison County as the owner/ operator of Big Pine Ranch Out- fitter and Trail Rides. Zarzycki said they were to-
gether for two years, and in that brief time, they took trips to Wyoming and Montana, enjoy- ing wagon trails and horseback rides. “Just about anything in life he
wanted to do, he did,” she said. Higgins was born in 1940 and
grew up in Yancey County. He spent several years as a barber and farmer in the Mars Hill area. Zarzycki said in his mid-40s,
Higgins went back to school to pursue a career in law enforce- ment. He became the leading homicide detective with the Buncombe County Sheriff ’s Of- fice. In 1986, he came to Weaver-
ville, where he served as police chief until his retirement in 1998.
Greg Stephens, who took over
as the town’s police chief for Hig- gins in 1998, said they worked together for eight years. “He taught me a lot about law
enforcement. He was a mentor in my early years as chief,” Ste- phens said. True to his cowboy spirit, Higgins was taken to the Mars
Hill Baptist Church Cemetery by a horse-drawn covered wagon driven by his son Mark Higgins and friend Jackie Lunsford. The fraternal order of police
honor guard presented full hon- ors as he was laid to rest. “He loved his family,” Zarzy-
cki said. “The community has lost a good, good person.”
