Weaverville More endorphins for the new year

By Leslie A. Cunningham Te other day, I found myself

working out on an elliptical train- ing machine thinking about how good I was feeling even though I was at a gym. Te gym has always been a negative experience for me primarily because there are so many mirrors. I always thought working out was much more inspiring being outside and around nature, while

walking with fresh air coming in my nose. I now stand corrected. My elbow started giving me

trouble last spring, and my regular yoga practice had to take the side- lines; but my heart loves when I am moving. Tis led me to walking our dogs more, hiking and mountain biking. However, lately Mother Nature

has put a twist on this plan. I have either been snowed in or unable to go to the gym because children are

home from school. All of this has left me with an overall feeling of de- feat. Even my dogs won’t venture off their respective blankets to walk with me. It is still January, and I have a

New Year’s resolution I am unable to fill. My reality check: I have exhausted all my excuses. What I have missed in not work-

ing out are the endorphins that are released in my body when my body is moving. Working out has again had to take on a different definition. Te kind of movement that allows the good chemicals, endorphins, to release in my body, and I naturally begin to feel good, confident and healthy. In 2011, I am challenging myself

to explore all the different ways I can experience movement which releases the natural drug my body is freely giving me regardless of the weather conditions. My plan: Winding myself up ev-

ery day and making the choice for myself. What do I want to do today to achieve feeling good naturally? Not because I have to lose weight (that will always be a factor), but be- cause I really enjoy being healthy. I benefit when my body is able to set the endorphins free no matter where I am working out or what exercises I am doing. I have also realized that I am sur-

rounded by amazing facilities that provide this outlet for me right here in Weaverville. Tere are amazing shops in our town that have the equipment I need to go to be out in nature.

I have endless hiking trails,

parks and roads right in my back- yard. Local gyms and studios include

the Neighborhood Y in Woodfin, Weaverville Yoga, I Am Living Yoga, Curves and Pilates Movement in Balance. Local sports shops include Cur-
