Concerns

Parents are encouraged to deal with concerns by approaching staff on a day to day basis. Formal complaints to the Governing Body and any other matters should be made via the school office. A copy of the school’s complaints and concerns policy is included at the back of this prospectus.

Parents and School

The school office is open from 8.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. each day.

The school encourages parents/carers to attend as many events as possible. We have two open meetings a year to discuss individual children’s standards and progress and a written report is provided at the end of the school year. Parents may, of course, make arrangements to speak with teachers during the year. They do this through the office, as teachers cannot be expected to talk with parents when they are teaching in class.

Parents are encouraged to come into school to support the children’s learning, such as helping with reading, accompanying visits, gardening, supporting curriculum events - and many other activities. Where parents/ carers have time or skills we hope they will let the school know. Parental help will be warmly welcomed. All volunteers now have a police check, which can be arranged through the school, to safeguard the children whilst in our care.

Collecting your child from school

School begins promptly at 8.55 a.m. This means children should be in the playground by 8.50 a.m. ready for the early morning bell. Children are collected from school at 3.30 p.m. at the end of the school day. We do not allow children under 7 to leave school unaccompanied, or with a minor. Parents should not arrive before 3.25 p.m. to collect their child, and should not come into the school building, as we need to keep the corridors clear in case of emergencies. Pushchairs should not be brought in for the same reason. Parents/carers are asked to come to the school office through the outside door, not through the school building. Reception children can be collected from outside their classroom and Year 1 children from the Hall in the Andrew building.

Parents/carers must wait outside the Francis building and collect their children from the playground when they are dismissed by their teachers. All children in downstairs classrooms will leave by the door from their classroom into the playground. Children from upstairs will leave by the main doors into the playground.

Health and Welfare During the school day the health and welfare of all children is

one of the principal concerns of the school.

If a child needs to take prescription medicines at school, the written instructions must be handed in with the medicine at the school office, and signed for. Only medicines prescribed for that child, and with the child’s name appearing on the label, may be given.

Children should bring their own tissues or handkerchiefs with them.

Parents should check their child’s hair and skin regularly. Please remember that head lice love clean hair. If any small white eggs are found on the hair near the roots, use the wet comb method on the child’s hair and all members of the family. You are able to buy shampoo directly from the pharmacy to treat cases of head lice. The school must be informed. It is the policy of the school to send any child with live lice home for treatment.

The school nurse visits the school and has an office in Andrew building. Parents are able to make an appointment to come in to see her if they have any medical concerns for their child. If school staff have concerns, they will first speak with the child’s parent/carer before referring to the school nurse. The school nurse is able to carry out initial hearing and sight tests if requested. The government programme for heights and weights for children in Reception and Year 6 is undertaken by the school nurse.

If a child has an accident (other than day to day scrapes and bruises) we will contact the parent/carer. It is MOST IMPORTANT that we have up to date emergency contact numbers for all parents/carers. These details are kept on a child’s ‘yellow card’.

The School’s Educational Welfare Officer (EWO) can help parents with any welfare problems they may have. EWO contact number is available from the school
