Art & Design, Design Technology

These two subjects are taught throughout the school. Planning and designing, drawing and paint- ing skills are developed to create finished products of high aesthetic value. Children are taught to evaluate their work and appreciate artwork from around the world

Information and Communication Technology

The school has a designated ICT suite, which is used by all classes, according to timetable. In addition, the classrooms in Francis building have access to a set of wireless laptops. All classes from Reception to Year 6 have interactive white- boards. The PCs in each classroom are linked to the school network and ICT suite server. Access to the internet is carefully monitored and the school uses a web filter to ensure inappropriate sites are not accessed. The school considers all aspects of ICT and has an explicit internet use agreement, signed by every child and parent/car- er. Identification of and response to cyber bulling is covered in the school’s behaviour policy.

Sex and Relationships Education

Physical Education Each class has two PE lessons a week, which

include games, gymnastics and dance. These lessons are essential in helping children to develop a positive attitude to team work and healthy life styles. In Key Stage 2 there are compulsory swimming lesson at a local swimming pool, with qualified swimming teachers. We have two fully equipped halls and in dry weather PE lessons may take place on the school playgrounds. For PE children need a pair of navy shorts, white t-shirt and black plimsolls. Sports day, for all children, is in the summer term.

Science

Children study science through investigation, testing and drawing conclusions. They are taught how to develop the skills for investigating science problems. There are three main areas of scientific knowledge, life and living processes, materials and physical processes, such as magnetism and electric- ity.

Children follow a programme of Personal, Social and Health Education all through school. This includes personal relationships, making moral choices and reaching decisions. These areas are all part of Sex and Relationships Education. Sex education is taught more specifically in Year 5. Parents are informed about the content of these lessons and have the right to withdraw children from the lessons. Our teaching is factually based but draws on the guidance of the Church, to make clear the importance of every person’s individual right and responsibility, both to themselves and others.
