Geography and History These two subjects are taught throughout the school;
children’s knowledge of the physical world, its people and their history reflects the world in which we live and from where our children have come. History and Geography are taught through a themed approach, ensuring skills are developed throughout the school. Each year, the school celebrates Black History month and holds an International Week.
Music
Music is an important subject within the school. We employ a specialist teacher working with each class every week. Children sing, play in- struments, listen to and appraise a wide range of music as well as compose their own. Instrumen- tal lessons are available for children in the junior classes, taught by peripatetic instrumental teach- ers; parents are asked to contribute towards the fee. There is a school choir.
English
All classes have a daily English lesson, to develop children’s skills in speaking & listening, reading and writing. All children are encouraged to take home reading books and books from the class libraries to share at home. The foundations for learning to spell is based on phonics. Children have many opportunities to read and write as they use their language skills across the whole curriculum. For children for whom English is an additional language, and who are at the early stages of acquisition of English, school provides a range of appropriate support.
Mathematics
All classes have a daily mathematics lesson, to help children develop their mathematical skills. As well as pen and paper work, mathematics skills are taught through practical activities and mental calculations. As they progress through school, children are increasingly expected to commit number facts, such as number bonds and multiplication tables, to memory. Children study number, shape and space, data handling and measurement and how to apply these con- cepts to real life situations.

Religious Education The School uses the Solihull syllabus as a basis
for RE. The scheme reflects Christianity and other World Faiths. We aim to develop under- standing of the worship, beliefs, traditions and origins of the Christian faith, and the beliefs and practises of other World Faiths. We give children opportunity to reflect on their own beliefs and spirituality and develop an understanding of the beliefs of others.
