Section 8: Careers and employability

Making yourself employable

LJMU’s World of Work or WoW initiative aims to ensure that every LJMU student is equipped with the skills they need to succeed professionally, by making them highly attractive to prospective employers or because they are well equipped to set up their own business.

Whatever your age or work experience, presenting the right employability skills and attributes is essential. At the heart of WoW lies a set of skills which have been drawn up following consultation with leading graduate employers, such as Sony, the NHS, Ford Europe and the British Chamber of Commerce. By asking employers what they want in a modern graduate, LJMU has ensured that students successfully graduating from the WoW® programme are exactly what graduate employers are looking for.

In 2009/10, over 3,000 LJMU students signed up for the WoW Certificate, the majority made up of Level 1 and 2 students. They recognised the need to enhance their degree with the WoW Certificate and also address their future while still at LJMU and before their final year commitments took hold. The growing need to compete for and secure internships at the end of the penultimate year at university means that gaining the WoW certificate early to convince your target employer that you have what it takes is really important. So don’t delay, sign up for the WoW process early and give yourself a head start.

What is WoW?

The WoW initiative offers everything you’d expect from a conventional careers service but that’s only the start of what’s on offer to our students. There are three more elements to WoW:

• Key transferrable skills, known as Graduate Skills, have been developed as part of every undergraduate degree programme. Faculty-based Skills Support Officers (SSOs) or Skills Development Co-ordinators (SDCs) will help you reflect on these skills, record them and ensure you maximise your graduate skills development and employability while studying at LJMU.

• Every LJMU degree programme has an element of work-related learning, which means you will have an opportunity to engage in real world projects or go on placements and apply your skills out in the workplace. Each Faculty has placement officers or work-related learning co- ordinators to help you with securing relevant projects, volunteering, internships or placement opportunities.
