India breaks down the barriers

India,” and the term is not lost on visitors who travel through this sprawling and diverse country. From an electronics perspective,

T ity of the

country is expanding rapidly in the areas of mobile phone production and auto- motive applications. Tere are also some strong pockets of growth in high reliability manufacturing such as military and medi- cal products. Tis is despite the fact that the government made importation of compo- nents exorbitantly high back in 2008. Tey are slowly easing up on this restriction. However, unlike China, the vast major- electronics manufacturing is

for

domestic consumption. India has a bur- geoning middle class, a young population (over 50% are under 25 year old) and a birth rate that is quite frankly, stagger- ing (51 children per minute, compared to China at only 27 per minute). Apart from the socio-economic prob-

lems this may cause, the Indian govern- ment must relax restrictions on business sufficiently to attract investment that will provide jobs for their growing population. I am confident that electronics manufactur- ing will play a central role in this country’s future growth. Another area that is expanding rap-

idly is solar power. Te Indian govern- ment announced a $19 billion initiative to expand solar power to 20,000 MW over the next 30 years. Needless to say, this has sparked a rash of start-ups, which are still in the nascent stages. Electronics manufac- turers benefit from this with the expanded number of inverters required to power these solar installations.

To cope with the growing market in

India, we have recently hired five new staff to run our India and South East Asia pub- lications, out of New Delhi. Te new team will be headed by Jaideep Sinha, a publish- ing professional with a 25-year pedigree in running publications. He will be assisted by Amitava Sarkar in Bangalore, who will be responsible for sales in south India, and Pradeep Chakraborty, who will be the technical editor on both Global SMT & Packaging and Global Solar Technology. He will be supported by a new assistant Editor, Kadambini Tarkur, and accounts and circulation manager, Aarti Bhandary. As I drove back to the airport,

the

number of high rise office and apartment complexes being built close to the airport brought back memories from over 20 years ago and my first visit to China. I wonder if we will see the same growth in India—time will tell.
