YouTube had achieved world domination. In it he describes a post-apocalyptic society





in which all the citizens were expected to “stream” all their day-to-day activities to make them available to everyone else.


Failure to do so was regarded as religious


heresy. The inhabitants of this dystopian society believed everything they were told.


A turning point in the book comes when the


government passes a new law which decrees that “everyone is famous”.


It seems to me that the modern poker world is becoming a microcosm of the society he described.


Hardly a day goes by without someone who


has never been heard of before becomes a new “star”; there is endless drivel about trivia from players on Twitter; videos and blogs about nothing in particular are multiplying at an amazing rate. But few question what is going on in the poker world and whether what is happening is good for the game (and the players) or otherwise. For example, it


continues to be taken for granted that RNGs (random number generators) which

bemerkenswerte Weitsicht, und zwar bevor Twitter, Facebook und You Tube die Welt erobert hatten. Elton beschreibt in diesem Buch eine post-


apokalyptische Gesellschaft, in der von allen Bürgern erwartet wird, sämtliche Aktivitäten zu „streamen“ und somit allen anderen Bürgern verfügbar zu machen. Wer sich nicht an diese Vorgabe hält, wird als Abweichler betrachtet. Darüber hinaus glauben die Einwohner dieser dystopischen Gesellschaft alles, was ihnen gesagt wird. Ein Wendepunkt im Buch ist ein neu


verabschiedetes Gesetz, in dem festgelegt wird, dass „jeder berühmt ist“.


Mir kam es beim Lesen so vor, als sei diese Gesellschaft ein Abbild der modernen Pokerwelt. Es vergeht kaum noch ein Tag, an dem nicht ein zuvor vollkommen Unbekannter zum neuen „Star“ gekürt wird; und auf Twitter, in Videos und auf Blogs steigt die Anzahl endloser und belangloser Geschichtchen ins schier Unermessliche.


Kaum jemand hinterfragt jedoch, was sich in der


Pokerwelt abspielt und ob die Entwicklungen gut für das Spiel (und die Spieler) sind oder nicht.


So wird beispielsweise immer noch als gesicherte


Erkenntnis angenommen, dass die von Onlinebetreibern eingesetzten Zufallszahlengeneratoren dieselben Pokerspiele erzeugen wie echte Kartendecks. Gelegentlich wird von einigen Skeptikern auf bestimmte Freak-Hände im Internet hingewiesen. Aber mit schöner Regelmäßigkeit wird solche Kritik sowohl von den Betreibern als auch von den Spielern zurückgewiesen, weil diese Computersysteme für unfehlbar halten. Daher mutete es seltsam an, als kürzlich eine Gruppe bedeutender Mathematiker eine ganze Radiosendung auf BBC Radio 4 damit verbrachte, über die Effi zienz von Zufallszahlengeneratoren zu debattieren – und diese teils infrage stellten. Auch die Höhe der Rakes und ihre Auswirkungen


auf die Verdienstmöglichkeiten der Spieler werden nur selten kritisch beleuchtet.


Im letzten Jahr schlug ich einer Pokerwebsite eine


andere Art von Turnierformat vor. Es zielte darauf ab, den Glücksfaktor zu reduzieren und den guten Spielern bessere Gewinnmöglichkeiten zu verschaffen. Die Antwort des virtuellen Cardrooms lautete, das sei nicht gewollt – gewünscht seien vielmehr Turniere, in denen jeder gewinnen könne.


Aber glauben Sie ruhig weiter daran und beten Sie die Sterne an – ich selbst habe das nie getan und werde es wohl auch in Zukunft nicht tun.

the freak nature of hands on the Internet but are rebuffed by both players who believe computerised systems can do no wrong and operators who protest their integrity. It was strange therefore that a group of eminent mathematicians in a recent radio broadcast on BBC Radio 4 spent an entire programme debating - and casting some doubt on - the effi cacy of RNGs. Few questions are asked about the level of rakes and their effect on players’ chances of making any money. Last year I proposed a different type of tournament format to one of the online web sites. It was aimed at reducing the luck factor and giving those who played correctly a better chance of winning. The reply from the virtual card room was that it did not want this – it wanted to run tournaments which anyone could win. Carry on believing, carry on worshipping the stars – but I never have and I am not going to start now.
