Ahhh February. The month of romance and hope and expectation, with Valentine’s day just around the corner, the snow drops showing the first signs of spring, and on top of all that, we have the highlight of the month — — “National chip week.” ( See page 6.) Talking of the first signs of life, we are all looking forward to seeing a spectacular display of the Purple crocuses marking the Rotary Club’s world wide battle against Polio. See page 18. With romance and flowers in mind we have a few pages on wedding things, 10 & 11, for those people considering tying the knot this year. Dare we look back at mother nature and suggest that she has delivered the worst of her winter weather, or would that be the commentators curse? We have introduced a new weather column on page 7, with our local weather man, Frank Whittaker, explaining that we have just endured the coldest December since records began in 1910. (-8C ? That wasn’t so bad. ) It looks like Frank will be reporting on the wettest January next month, when he has all the facts together, which leads us onto the next subject…Australia. Now we know they’ve had it bad down under with some horrendous flooding in Queensland and the East, and we wish them well. But we couldn’t let them off the hook without mentioning the fact that we absolutely stuffed them in the ashes cricket series. ( More details throughout these pages.) Last Month’s Schools drawing competition gave us quite a shock at the high level of response with votes flooding in with as many as 50 on one day alone. Wow!!! We have details on page 3. We had a complaint last month that there wasn’t as many jokes in the Herald as usual. On investigation the lady realised that her husband had been reading it at breakfast time, and the jam had stuck a few pages together. Nonetheless, we’ve tried to cram in all the usual daft stuff and a bit more. Enjoy.
