January in Eden, Utah, with my husband and family. While my intentions were to be in this small town during the Christmas holidays and back in San Diego by January 3, unexpected circumstances kept me in Eden, where on New Year’s Day, Jack and I wrote “2011” in the fresh snow. In quite an exhilarating change from San Diego, I stopped for deer and wild turkey cross- ing the street, instead of surfers. On the spur of the moment, my brother
R
Rich, who lives in Florida, extended his holiday vacation to spend a weekend with me cross-country skiing along creeks and fro- zen lakes. We also took a snowcat ride at night, joyously referring to it as the Polar Express. Neither of us planned this wonderful trip, which allowed us to explore unknown areas, bond as brother and sister and remember how important it is to make time to be with nature and loved ones. This February issue is being delivered to you with renewed love, spirit and in- tensified energy, thanks to spending time in nature and with family. Rich, a writer, generously helped me with my newsletters and eased my anxiety about not getting my work finished in time. As I write this letter, my daughter Kathryn is on her way to spend four days
with me. Terramoto, the sustainable transportation service, is delivering her to and from the airport. It is comforting to know she will be in green hands. Because my life as a publisher is all about schedules, this trip has made me
particularly grateful for all the spontaneous events, people and things that ap- pear in my life. One of them is my Floridian nephew Mike, who introduced me to Natural Awakenings while I was visiting him in the Sunshine State. He will soon be on his way to Eden. All these impromptu experiences in January taught me that I don’t have to wait or plan for holidays that allow me to rejuvenate with loved ones. From now on, they’ll be my reminders for keeping my eyes and heart open for any opportunity. Because Natural Awakenings, Natural Pet has a booth January 29-30 at the
Del Mar Fairgrounds, I decided this month’s recipes should be for pet lovers. Check out, “Healthy Stews for Dogs” (page 25)—they sounded so good, my editor thought they were people recipes. Alison Spencer, co-owner of C & B Specialty Pet Foods, laughed and said that pet food should be like healthy human food. The Body Mind and Spirit Expo is coming to San Diego on February 5-6. It’s
a great kick-off for our new Healthy Mind department this month, which features Diana Guest discussing Imago Therapy and Bioenergetic Analysis. Dr. T is back in San Diego this month, offering talks about How Innocent Foods Can Destroy Our Health and How Electromagnetic Fields and Radiation Sources Damage Our Health (page 34). Don’t miss our Sustainable Living series, where you can learn the first three secrets in a sustainable economist’s green sauce for turning your bottom line green.
Smiles be bright,
elax, release, refresh and recharge. I was reminded of how important these four principles are while I spent the month of
