a sitting-height bed. Simple bedside blocks and work tables have been crafted from timber and spray-painted white for a seamless effect, while suspended lamps from Light Phase drop low to illuminate pockets of the space. The provision of mood lighting proves particularly effective around the non- traditional ‘headboards’ that consist of a wall panel set back from the rest of the room in a special paint finish known as Armourcoat. Constrained by the historical site’s layout, the hotel has worked around the irregular floor plans, as can be seen in one category of signature room where existing pillars have been retained and dressed with dual-language lettering.

It is within the wining and dining venues

that other hues begins to creep in. “We wanted to subtly move away from the black and white by introducing accent colours that reflect the local culture,” says Henry Yong, Senior Designer at Jane Yeo Design Consultants, another local firm that took responsibility for the interiors of food and beverage. “So in the lounge, red oriental lattice-work frames the windows and red and silver upholstery in a bespoke cotton sewn with gold thread adds a touch of glamour.” Antique depictions of deities and traditional Chinese carvings have

been given a contemporary high-gloss finish in keeping with the rest of the hotel. Leading to the first-floor terrace, home to alfresco Spanish restaurant The Club Tapas, a walkway contains old street lamps refashioned as pendant lighting fixtures. Metal sheeting has been cut and shaped in points to mimic the outline of a mouth. Outside, billowing rolls of white and black fabric provide a canopy to the restaurant with its ivy-covered walls, wood decking and ambient lighting. On the top floor of the four-storey building, rooftop bar Ying Yang falls broadly in line with the monochromatic palette but mood lighting bathes the bar in varying colours. MOD supervised the original design here, choosing a black granite-topped bar and clubby chairs, as well as fitting a perforated metal wall and ceiling with inset LED lamps to re-create the floral/branch motif seen in the floors below. With its attractive outdoor area, Ying Yang has become a popular evening spot. Reflecting on the fast turnaround, Seah adds that it has been an interesting challenge to develop a contemporary spin on the colonial theme without being kitsch. By alluding to the past yet taking a modern approach, MOD has managed to carve a clear identity for this boutique hotel.
