shifting needs of our guests, many of whom
have been with the hotel from the beginning. Their requests have changed; many have built families and require more space when travelling.”
“With the design of the suites for the 16th
floor, we took advantage of the incredibly expansive views, bringing the relationship of the city right into the rooms,” says Sofield. “To impart a more personal experience, the layout of each suite was carefully considered to create spaces for entertaining, relaxing and working. The final result is a place guests should feel right at home, albeit with all the amenities of a five-star hotel.” Sofield employed rich materials and textures in palettes of chocolate, champagne, and taupe. Solid steel, marble, and wood are softened by luxurious fabrics like velvet, silk, and supple leathers. Ebonised ash plank
wood flooring is strewn with vintage area rugs. An appreciation for artistry is visible in the selection of custom and vintage pieces and in the workmanship of the cabinets, wire-glass mirror, and coffee table made from recycled newspapers. Tables are inspired by renowned artist Jasper Johns and the master bath’s wall covering was designed by famed New Yorker illustrator, Saul Steinberg. The suites are located on a private floor, accessible only with an exclusive key card. Each room is equipped with wall-mounted flatscreen plasma televisions and iPod dock. Working desks have a 27-inch iMacs and an iPad pre-loaded with GrandLifeNYC’s carefully curated downtown City Guide. It may not have been around long enough
to warrant grand dame status, but in terms of Soho’s boutique hotels it is perhaps the granddaddy of them all.
