RECEPTION
Welcome Late last year I visited New York for the first time
in almost a decade. On my previous visit, the city’s hotels were still recovering from 9/11. This time around, the mood was more positive.
COVER STORY: The developers of Lime Wood in the New Forest are hoping to catapult the hotel into the top tier of country house hotels in the UK, having assembled a dreamteam of industry talent. Its designs are by interior designer David Collins Studio, and architects Charles Morris and Ben Pentreath of Working Group Design. The operations team is headed by Hotel du Vin founder and ex-Soho House Group chairman Robin Hutson, working with Hotel Director Justin Pinchbeck, formerly GM at The Zetter.
I was in town for the launch of the Boutique Design expo, an adjunct to the massive IHMRS hospitality trade show, with the potential to fill the gap for a design-led hospitality exhibition on the East Coast of the United States. But the best reflection of the current hotel design aesthetic in New York was to be found not in the aisles of the Jacob K. Javits centre but around the corner at Hell’s Kitchen fleamarket. A beguiling mix of quirky objects, thriftstore finds, artisanal one-offs, and classic 20th century design pieces were in evidence at many of the hotels I visited such as The Ace, Andre Balazs’ Standard New York and Bill Sofield’s new suites at The Soho Grand. Two of the most successful New York hotels of recent years have been spearheaded by London-based operators – Firmdale’s Crosby Street Hotel and Soho House New York both succeeding in bringing a quintessentially English style of hotel Stateside. But there is plenty of traffic heading in the opposite direction, with several New York based hoteliers due to open hotels in London over the next couple of years. Having finally got his partnership with Marriott off the ground with the launch of Edition Hotels late last year, Ian Schrager will soon be bringing the concept to London, Marriott having acquired the Berners Hotel in Fitzrovia for conversion to an Edition. Thompson Hotels are working on the launch of Belgraves with British designer Tara Bernerd. André Balazs is also rumoured to have acquired a site in London. Back in New York, the latest news is Schrager’s sale of Gramercy Park, to allow him to launch two new brands, independent of Edition Hotels, although sadly it appears he has turned down the opportunity to acquire that bohemian institution The Chelsea. Even in New York’s extraordinary hotel scene, the idea of the Studio 54 originator taking on the former home of Bob Dylan, Charles Bukowski and Arthur
C.Clarke would have been something special.
