Tidworth & Bulford 10
place in Tidworth. Although Tidworth may be considered isolated, there are good rail services to London and other main cities from Andover and Salisbury. The new motorways have shortened road journeys to the North and East very considerably. Bus services provide very fair communications locally, details of which are provided elsewhere in this Guide.
The villages of Ludgershall, Weyhill, Shipton Bellinger and Bulford are close to Tidworth and offer a variety of Public Houses, Churches, Garages, as well as various Youth and other activities.
Andover, Amesbury and Salisbury are slightly further away, but offer Nightclubs and various other entertainments, including weekly markets, a Cathedral, and Arts venues.
Stonehenge
Stonehenge, less than 15 miles from Tidworth, is a recognised World Heritage Site. The only stone circle to have dressed stones and lintels, it was originally built at the same time as the other stone circles (Avebury being the nearest and one of the biggest) of rough stones. Unlike the others, though, Stonehenge seems to have undergone more than one change in its long period of use. It appears to have reached its current state somewhere around 1600 to 1200 BC. It is also surrounded by other monuments, including many burial mounds of various types.
It is situated just off the A303 to the west of Amesbury, and is open daily, except Christmas Eve to Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Contact 01980 624715
Woodhenge
Discovered through aerial photography in 1925, Woodhenge has been overshadowed by its larger neighbour. Very little is known about this monument. It is open to the public all year round, and can be found half a mile north of Amesbury, just off the A345.
