Tidworth & Bulford 10 Foreword by
Col PJ Tabor MVO Garrison Commander
Welcome to the Garrison and to the Army Welfare Services Community Guide. The aim of this Guide is to help all of you, single of married, who live in the Garrison to get the best value from all that the Garrison and local area have to offer.
Many of the very significant changes to the infrastructure of the Garrison described in earlier editions of this Guide have now taken place or are coming to a conclusion: Project Allenby has just delivered its 200th building; most single living accommodation in Tidworth and Perham Down is complete; and new diners, training wings, pubs, headquarters buildings and technical accommodation such as hangars are either built or well on their way to completion. The considerable disruption my predecessor spoke of in his foreword has transferred to Bulford where much building still remains to be done. The speed and degree of change across the Garrison is quite extraordinary and will affect everyone’s lives for the better.
On the families’ accommodation front, many of our houses, specifically in Bulford, are being upgraded. There are major plans to demolish and rebuild the Canadian Estate in Bulford, at the same time doubling the housing stock on that estate, and plans exist to build a brand new estate in Tidworth with about 350 houses for our military families. All of these things point to a really major investment in the conditions of service for all of us who work and live in and around the Garrison.
While modernisation of the physical infrastructure of the Garrison is firmly on track, there is also a wide range of quality support agencies and services operating within the Garrison. These include Army Welfare Service (AWS), HIVE, Pre-School Groups, After School Groups, Youth Groups, Army Families Federation (AFF), Tidworth Employment Opportunity (TEMPO), the monthly Garrison newsletter Drumbeat and two FM radio stations. The profile of our local schools will be significantly raised with the launching of Wellington Academy on the current site of Castledown School, with its new Sixth Form, in September.
This is a really excellent Guide to all local services, facilities and attractions which I encourage you to make full use of. In terms of local publicly funded sevices, we are increasingly well served here, and the newly formed Wiltshire Council is very closely involved in identifying the specific needs of the military community across the County and especially in the Tidworth, Netheravon and Bulford Garrison area. The military Community here enjoys a very good relationship with its local non-military community and shares many of its facilities, such as the Tidworth Leisure Centre. The Garrison also works very closely with local government agencies to secure funding from sources other than the MOD for the benefit of all.
I hope you enjoy the experience of living and working in the Garrison area. I encourage you all to play an active part in Garrison life, to contribute to the local community and to assimilate as much as possible into the surrounding area. There is much to do and to enjoy in this part of the world.
