Hawks come to end of tough season and...
We have seen some tough football seasons here
lately in North Buncombe, and Friday night’s (Nov. 6) game will end another tough season. Fans are questioning everything dealing with Hawks football, even our coverage of the BlackHawks, and we understand the frustration. To make sure everyone understands how we’ve been doing our coverage over the past few years, I
Clint Parker
would just like to explain what we’ve done. In the past, articles about the games were writ-
ten by Loren Metts, wife of coach Carey Metts. We added an editor’s note to the end of the ar- ticle telling readers of her association. Loren relin- quished her football writing duties this year. We decided to augment our coverage slightly and do a review of the previous week’s game and a preview of the upcoming game each week as our article. In past years we’ve also had a column by Chris
Sluder, who wrote a commentary on the games. Pictures from home games come from Andy Cart- er with Grafxsounds. We’ve also tried to cover the controversies sur-
rounding those who questioned the coach’s abil- ity to lead the team. In 2006, we had several ad- vertisements and letters in support of and against Metts. We also had a few articles earlier this year when a group of parents went to the school board about the coach. All in all, I thought we had been doing a pretty
good job as a small-town newspaper without the benefit of a real sports reporter. However, this past week, we had a call that let us know that some were questioning our coverage and even suggest- ing that we were being “paid off” by Metts. To be clear: We’re not being “paid off,” and I’m
not sure why anyone would think such a thing. Are we biased toward NBHS? Yes, and I think a
community newspaper should be. We have not overly criticized the players or the
coaches during this season or last season or any other season. People say that we should have questioned the
coaching staff by looking at the winning records of some of the other area programs (middle school, junior varsity, NBYAA) as well as the attrition on this year’s team and we should have known to ask more questions. All I can say we’ll try to do better. We certainly
would love to hear from anyone with writing tal- ent and sports knowledge who thinks they could help better our coverage. What I do know is that another tough, losing
season is about to be over. As for this being the end of Metts coaching the BlackHawks, we’ll have to wait and see what transpires after this last game.
Madison County toy run A run to raise money and toys for needy families
in the area will be Saturday (Nov. 6) and begin at 11 am at Tractor Supply Company in Weaverville and travel to Madison Middle School. Donations are $10 or a toy of equal value. Lunch
will be provided, and trophies will be presented to the best dressed motorcycle or car. Contact Wanda Roberts at 206-9200 for more information.

Would you say that the Tribune’s cov- erage of the NB BlackHawks was fair, biased or inadequate?
Summer - I would say that North Buncombe
is Weaverville’s school, so the coverage makes sense. It’s supposed to be biased to a point. :) Other parts of the county can make their own newspaper and cover their own county schools.
Tanya - I concur with Summer!! Daniel - You did a far better job than the
Citizen-Times, not just on sports but on every- thing happening in the immediate area.
Carole - We need a paper that is proud of us
and will support schools in the area! Daniel - I agree! Tracy - I think you should be a little biased
‘cause NB schools are in Weaverville Tribune’s area.
Ronnie - Is the truth biased? Daniel - So are Woodfin Elementary, Erwin
Middle, Erwin High, Leicester Elementary.

Would you say that the Leader’s cov- erage of the Erwin Warriors was fair, biased or inadequate?
Inadequate or not equal to that
which you cover NB, which is sad considering you bear my community’s name. You have a wonderful community paper, it just doesn’t happen to represent my community much any more. It used too, but I was told that... our community did not advertise as heavily as did NB so that is why they get more coverage and always the front section of the paper.
Greg - Well said! Randy - Could not have said it better myself. Rich - I give you a B+ for effort, but you need
a box score, more photos, etc. It’s not too late. For the playoffs, they deserve many long ar- ticles. Talk about the offensive line instead of the same players over and over.
Jenny - It really depends upon the week. I
personally feel that Erwin should probably get more coverage since they do have a better win- loss record. Overall, it would be nice if the pa- per would have more community stories and I really enjoyed the recipes section. I notice that isn’t in there every week.
