TOOLED UP FOR THE SUMMER REFURBISHMENT RUSH
Shutdowns during the August holidays provides schools with the only chance in the year to organise often much needed repairs to swimming pools. For those winning the repair contracts it means that suddenly high summer and the holiday season is the busiest time of the year

It’s a month when the children are on their summer school break, the weather is seasonally warmer and it’s the time when school pools in particular become the focus of much needed repairs and renovations.

For UPS, the Manchester based, swimming pool refurbishment company it is one of the most critical times of the year as swimming pool managers throughout the UK – particularly schools – take the opportunity of the summer break to make reparations to pools and pool environments. This August was no exception as UPS dealt with the surge of refurbishment requirements prompted by this seasonal window of opportunity. Among the challenges for the underwater repair specialists which needed simultaneous contract management – were two special school hydrotherapy pools and a public swimming pool:
1. Ravenscliffe Special School Eighteen months ago, UPS were contacted by the managers of Ravenscliffe Special School, in West Yorkshire to supply a quotation for refurbishing the school’s essential hydrotherapy pool. The pool had two levels – the higher level being constructed from solid concrete. The renovation challenge was to remove the concrete which comprised the higher level and in so doing, create a pool of one constant depth. In addition, UPS were to retile all the pool surrounds and the walls of the room in which the pool is situated. UPS were awarded the work and a pre-contract

meeting agreed colour schemes and a start date for the work. The first step was the removal of the solid concrete structure of the pool’s higher level, during which it was discovered that three sides of the pool tank were in need of underpinning. UPS prepared the necessary shuttering, into which they poured new concrete to create the reformation of the swimming pool tank. Martin Moorman, the Partner-Head said: “From the moment we started working with UPS, I knew that we were going to get on. They did everything on time and on budget and I would gladly endorse the services of UPS for anyone requiring similar work.”
2. Springwood Special School At Springwood Special School, Swinton, Manchester, UPS knew the school was experiencing problems with the existing mosaic tile finish to its swimming pool, which had been applied by a previous contractor. Areas of mosaic kept lifting from the base of the pool, and as one area was repaired, another lifted.
UPS were asked to carry out a complete retiling of the pool, using alternative tiles. A scheme was then prepared by UPS and submitted for consideration by their client.
Site Manager, Ian Howarth, said: “UPS are very good and I’m certainly happy. They have done work for us in the past with satisfactory results – particularly the repeated replacement of the faulty mosaic. They proved very helpful, for instance, when another crew arrived to install a hoist and the UPS crew worked around them without complaint. They also did a fine job of clearing all the dust generated by the removal of the old tiling.”
3. Duns Swimming Pool Berwickshire The well known Duns Swimming Pool in Scotland was refurbished following an application to the Scotland Rural Priorities Fund. The management team asked UPS to quote for the refurbishment of the swimming pool tank, including the removal of existing imperial size scum channel blocks and their replacement with those of a new metric module; the retiling of the swimming pool surrounds and the walls of the hall in which the swimming pool is situated and the retiling of changing room walls and floors.
On removing the tiles from the changing room floors, the screeding to the floor area comprised 18 mm of floating screed which had deteriorated and required removal and replacement with a new screed, in compliance with BS 5385. During the project, numerous difficulties arose and were overcome by UPS. All construction joints had to be replaced and due to the failure of the existing render, re-rendering had to be carried out as and where necessary. Also, upon removal of the old imperial size scum channel blocks, additional preparation was required to the existing structure to accommodate the installation of the new metric size scum channel blocks. There was further extra work required which breached the client’s budget, but to ensure that the work was completed properly, UPS absorbed the extra costs. spn
