TONBRIDGE POOL SOLVES LOWER COSTS, CLEANER WATER DILEMMA
measures the current free and combined chlorine, pH value, TDS and redox potential. If the pool water quality is within the pre-set limits the DEPOLOX® Pool controller signals the VSDs to reduce the speed of the circulation pumps. Should the pool water quality deviate, the controller will automatically resume normal circulation.
One of the big issues for commercial pool owners is to keep energy costs low and guarantee water quality for swimmers. One classic example of this dilemma has been dealt with by the staff at Tonbridge Swimming Pool who wanted to minimise energy consumption, whilst maintaining optimal water quality conditions as bather loads fluctuate. They contracted a consultancy service to help them and contacted Siemens Water Technologies to provide a solution compatible with their current treatment system. Siemens already provided the site with their existing chlorine dosing system. Tonbridge Swimming Pool in Kent was opened in 1996. The centre, which receives an average of 630
bathers per day, boasts a 25m indoor pool, an outdoor pool, fitness pool and a learner pool.

Siemens advised and implemented the installation of eight SED2 variable speed drives (VSDs), a ChemWeb-Server and three DEPOLOX® Pool systems. These were to operate with the existing Siemens chlorine gas disinfection system, to provide an integrated water treatment and energy conservation solution. The VSDs are easy to use, cost effective and provide tangible benefits across their lifecycle. The VSDs were introduced to the system to enable between 25 and 50% savings on the circulation pump energy consumption.

The benefits of swimming as a physical exercise are widely recognised – and as commercial pools search for more ways to attract customers the lead has been taken by one Aqua Fit class in Barnsley which have shed 100 stone between them since the sessions were established just four years ago! Since starting with just two people back in 2006 the classes have now become a twice-weekly treat. Every Tuesday at 10am and Friday at 2.15pm around 30 men and women gather in the Hoyland Leisure Centre swimming pool, for their weekly Aqua Fit session run by swimming instructor Liz Pedley.
Liz said: “The great thing about Aqua Fit is that anyone and everyone can take part. We have expectant mums, disabled and able bodied, people suffering with heart conditions, arthritis, both male and female of all ages – our oldest Aqua fitter is 93, with our youngest being 24!”
Among the regular members of her class are husband and wife Jude and Daryl Watson of Hoyland Common. Jude, 44, and Daryl, 33, are both disabled; Daryl is confined to a wheelchair following a motorbike accident when he was just 19 and Jude suffers from a combination of conditions which cause her severe joint pain.
The couple swim almost every day at Hoyland Leisure Centre, where hoists are available to help disabled people get in and out of the pool. Barnsley Premier Leisure has received the Swimming Teachers Association mark (STAmark) in
recognition of the high standard of its swimming lessons.

As a complete system the integrated package of products allowed Tonbridge Pool to make some significant savings on energy consumption, whilst still ensuring the highest possible water quality. The equipment forms systems that allows Tonbridge Swimming Pool to make savings on the energy used. Of prime importance was maintaining required water quality. When free and combined chlorine, pH, redox, and conductivity are at user-defined values, the ‘Eco’ mode from the VSDs reduces the flow in the circulation pumps by 20%, dropping energy consumption to 50% of regular usage. The installation of the drives also gave an immediate saving of 25% as the pool flow is paced to the original design flow, eliminating ‘throttling back’ on the filters.
£38M PROJECT GIVES NORTHERN IRELAND ITS FIRST OLYMPIC POOL
A £38m leisure centre project, which includes a £15m investment from the Northern Ireland Executive, will give the country its first Olympic sized pool.
Barr + Wray Ltd, one of the UK’s leading swimming pool and aqua leisure providers, has secured a £2.5m contract to carry out works. Glasgow-based Barr + Wray has been appointed by main contractor Farrans Construction, on behalf of North Down Borough Council, to install the 50m swimming pool in Bangor, County Down.
Barr + Wray will supply and install three water treatment systems for the pool, diving pool and wave pool, as well as the wave generator, diving bubbler system and pumping for various water slides and two spa pools. It has also been contracted to install two moveable floors and two submersible booms for the 50m pool and an additional floor for the diving pool.
Bangor’s new complex will create some 200 jobs and the protection of 20 existing roles.
