JACUZZI’S 2011

COLLECTION

STILL HAS ITS ORIGINS IN TRADITIONAL INNOVATION

he Jacuzzi story is a tale of sheer determination and hard work. Such focus, dedication and drive was fundamentally cultivated with family at the heart. With seven brothers, six sisters, two World Wars and immigration, the founding Jacuzzi family spent their lifetime exploring new ideas and experimenting with product designs to build a business. The Jacuzzi brothers started on the road to product development from 1915, when eldest brother Rachele invented and launched the first successful aeroplane propeller, – the Jacuzzi Toothpick. Then, the brothers embarked on designing, launching and flying a full aeroplane. They launched the J-7 monoplane, the first aeroplane to carry passengers and give them an outside view. It featured the first enclosed cabin, concealing the cockpit from passengers. A tragic accident in July 1921 shocked the family so much that the brothers took a different route with their innovations. Their engineering skill and interest in hydraulics and the thermodynamics of fluids led them from aviation to agriculture. The Jacuzzi brothers launched a frost machine in 1923, a solution that helped farmers protect their crop from bad frosts. Putting their engineering spirit into helping the farmers led Rachele and his brothers to design and produce the first injector

pump in 1926. The solution was to force pressurised water down one pipe, creating a suction, which would draw in water from the well and push it out of a second pipe. The Jacuzzi pump was a huge success and in 1930 was awarded a gold medal by the Californian Agricultural Society and acclaimed for its commitment to ‘inventions releasing availability and lowering the cost of water’.

In 1943 Kenneth Jacuzzi developed rheumatic fever, which left him with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. He was almost two years old. Recognising that monthly hydrotherapy sessions at hospital eased his son’s symptoms, led Candido Jacuzzi, the youngest of the brothers, to develop a new product that would give Kenneth more regular treatment at home. Little did Candido realise, that not only did the new idea help improve his son’s illness, but it also sparked a new luxury trend that would extend worldwide. In 1954 he filed a patent for the J-300, a first submersible portable pump that could be used in a bathtub at home. The J-300 became a new commodity and an overnight success. Candido was issued a patent for the first whirlpool system designed for home use on 20 March 1956. From there, the Jacuzzi brothers continued to listen to their customers and in 1962 they developed the J-500 and J-600, two stand alone bathing units with exterior pump. The company launched the first ‘family spa’ in 1964 which held more people and featured wall mounted jets.

In 1969 Roy Jacuzzi, grandson of Guiseppe (fourth brother in the original family) launched a new range of ‘whirlpool’ baths named the Roman bath collection and from here; the growth in a new industry began.

Leading

the way with innovation – the latest launch from Jacuzzi® is ‘Unique’, a hot tub that can be used indoor or out

The engineering and technological advancements in hydrotherapy and jetted baths continued to flourish as new additions and ideas appeared on Jacuzzi whirlpool baths and hot tubs. In the late 1990s Jacuzzi launched numerous new hot tub concepts including Jacuzzi branded spas from their factory in California and then produced

Spring Spas for some of the DIY chains in the UK. The J-300 Premium brand of hot tubs, was launched in 2003. This range proved successful again, so in 2005 they launched the smaller J-200 series, then commercial spas in 2006 and the J- 400 series in 2007, with latest design features such as iPod docking stations, colour waterfalls and improved filtration solutions. The Jacuzzi group is working on developing the ultimate hydrotherapy experience for customers. In 2009, Jacuzzi partnered with JBL, a leading audio company to develop an exclusive sound system with high definition speakers. In 2010 the company launched a J-1000 control system incorporating a plug-in control box for easy set up, a colour LCD screen with multiple options and a waterproof wireless remote.

In 2011, look out for the brand new J-LX collection, which boasts an exclusive new hidden acrylic hot tub design, another first for the industry. Hydrotherapy is also heightened with lounger seating now featuring PowerPro™ FX jets rather than bubbler jets. Listening to customer feedback has always been a priority for the Jacuzzi Group and based on recent market research, a rising concern in the market is energy efficiency and the running costs of owning a hot tub. The new collection is therefore now up to 48% more energy efficient than any other hot tub in the market. The Jacuzzi Group has also invested in its engineering capability in California, with a new Energy Chamber, certified by an independent third party. This chamber is designed to test a variety of materials and configurations. New software continuously monitors power consumption and all 2011 test results on current and new models are documented and used in marketing claims. And so the Jacuzzi journey of innovation continues... spn
