SPATA AIMS FOR 5% MEMBERSHIP GROWTH
SPATA membership has been affected with numbers lower than last year. The association annual meeting heard there is a real challenge to reach out for new members, while retaining existing members with more value for money. SPATA currently has just under 200 members and the target is to boost membership by 5% a year. Richard Carrington, Chairman of the SPATA National Council said: “It is vital that SPATA members take full advantage of the services provided by the association. That means contributing to the organisation in terms of finding time to read SPATA News, being familiar with the relevant parts of the SPATA Standards as they impact on your business, attending seminars or regional meetings as well as keeping updated via formal training sessions.
“The more time and effort you put in, the more rewards SPATA members should reap,” he said.
‘GIVE US YOUR IDEAS ON SPATEX DEVELOPMENT’
BSPF members have been asked for ideas on how SPATEX should be developed.
The trade exhibition was launched in Brighton in 1997 and the 2011 event will be the fifteenth show. Organisers have a number of options to consider for the future but are keen for BSPF members to come forward with their thoughts. Said BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes: “SPATEX has added elements over the years to cater for the needs of commercial pools and wet facility operators – together with the interests of both private pool owners and would- be owners. There has always been a wealth of expertise on subjects such as equipment performance, environmental issues, planning, technical regulations and Health & Safety considerations.
“In addition, the ‘Pool and Spa Buyers’ Guide to Everything’ will again feature a walk-through in a designated area, graphically illustrated by photographs and other exhibits. The potential for existing pool and spa owners will have the opportunity to compare products and prices from the entire range starting with a basic pool kit right through to the £100,000 plus indoor pool. “All of the workshops are free and there are 13 completely new workshop titles, with new presenters and three dedicated sessions for pool operators, a comprehensive and varied technical programme, organised by ISPE is guaranteed! The Saturday start maximises the number of visitors. This will lead to ‘Less time away from the office’ for the trade visitor, more convenient times available for the serious public!” SPATEX takes place from Saturday 5 to Monday 7 February 2011.

PRESIDENTS WEEKEND BY THE SEASIDE
Blackpool was the place to be as Tony Welsby hosted the 2010 BSPF President’s Weekend from the Lancashire seaside resort.
Over 100 guests took up the invite of Tony and Carol Darbyshire to join them in early October at the Barcel Blackpool Imperial Hotel for the traditional autumn weekend which marks the year in office of the new president of the British Swimming Pool Federation.
The formal part of the weekend was the official handing over of the presidency from outgoing President Certikin’s Ben Studdy to Tony Welsby. Tony, whose Spa Crest Europe business is based
in Wigan, welcomed guests including former BSPF President and PIP Chairman Jamie Adams, Richard Carrington, Chairman of the SPATA National Council, Isobel Rickards-Sanger, new Chair of BISHTA and immediate past president Ben Studdy. Tony moves into the BSPF President’s role after being chairman last year of BISHTA and is only the second person in that role to move up to take over the full BSPF presidency.
The weekend included an informal seaside- themed supper as well as a formal President’s dinner and the chance to enjoy the wealth of entertainment offered in Blackpool.
