Pool&SpaIndustry DEC 2010 SPN EXCLUSIVE: AGM’S REPORT
Future plans for the UK’s three organisations were laid out in detail when the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA held their annual meetings in Andover recently. Chris Hayes, Managing Director, said all three had achieved major successes during 2010 but there were serious challenges ahead
POOR PRACTICE HAS TO BE ROOTED OUT SAYS NEW BSPF PRESIDENT
Highlighting poor practice in the industry is to be one of the key objectives for the British Swimming Pool Federation’s new President Tony Welsby. Speaking at the BSPF’s annual meeting after taking over his presidency he said: “We must continue to review what we pledge to offer our customers and also our inter-trade relationships. By strengthening our offer, this makes us even stronger in resisting some of the unscrupulous practices by a few non members in our industry.” He said his other main objectives over the coming 12 months were to support the members with information and resources, so that they can be better equipped with the latest information and if possible to have a workforce plan in place. His third and final objective is to work with Ben Studdy to finish off, where possible, any outstanding items to achieve consistency between presidents.
He said he was especially proud to be only the second BISHTA member to become BSPF President. Outgoing president Ben Studdy said he had focused on standards, ethics and education during his year in office. “Progress has been made on all three and some have borne fruit, while others are still being shaped.
“Both SPATA and BISHTA have reviewed their Standards and these have been produced this summer.
“Education continues to evolve, with training courses held this year by BISHTA and SPATA, as well as other members of the industry. There have been updates on the Transportation of Dangerous Goods legislation and also courses on water treatment training.
“Workforce development discussions continue to identify what our industry needs and how we can get the best value for money.
“In respect of a qualification, this remains our ultimate goal and we still have some way to go. Discussions are ongoing about a BISHTA Spa Technician’s qualification that will provide more credibility to those companies that can prove they use qualified staff.
“The Code of Ethics has been updated for SPATA and more work needs to be done, with members to make sure they are practical and understood by members. Further revisions are necessary for both BISHTA and SPATA to be sure they are still fit for purpose and that where possible, we go the extra mile. “Inter-trade relationships need to remain strong and businesses need to understand where they can help each other.
“Using mediation, if applicable, is something that can be offered to BISHTA and SPATA members and some have taken this up. Dispute resolution can be an effective way of dealing with issues that might otherwise bring the industry into disrepute.”
Chris Hayes, Managing Director of BSPF told the meeting that new a PR contract with BOTTLE PR and a new magazine licence agreement with Go Publishing were significant developments during the year.
He said the PIP committee had been very active. “The committee continues to work hard on the promotion of our industry to the public… clearly identify ownership of our industries products as desirable and affordable… whilst highlighting the many benefits that a swimming pool or hot tub brings to families including fun, relaxation and a healthier lifestyle.”
His review of the years also highlighted the importance and role the BSPF had to play on building regulations, water conservation and European norms for domestic pools and spas. Equally important he stressed were the partnerships formed with Swimming Forum, BSi (SW136 / Working Group 8) DCLG (Building Regulations) DEFRA (Water Conservation) and EUSA and CEN (European norms).
ISSY MOVES UP TO CHAIR BISHTA
Issy Rickards Sanger from Elite Spas is the new Chair of BISHTA. She steps up from her role as Vice Chair and takes over from Tony Welsby from SpaCrest Europe, who is the new President of the British Swimming Pool Federation.
