HANDS ACROSS THE WATER A team led by artist Peter Fink of Form associates (UK) and Mark Major of Speirs + Major (UK), supported by Buro Happold (USA) was announced as the winners of an international competition to light the iconic 2.5 mile long bridge across the San Diego Bay in California. The team’s design incorporates programmable LED lighting powered by wind turbines. The lighting will respond to the rate and intensity of road traffic on the bridge, as well as major boat traffic through the shipping channel, and aims to emphasise the San Diego – Coronado Bay Bridge’s importance as a gateway between communities. It is anticipated that the project will be completed by 2014. www.formassociates.eu www.speirsandmajor.com www.burohappold.com

PERFECT SKIN Simone Giostra & Partners have designed the AirPix – a groundbreaking proposal integrating digital media technology and a flexible photovoltaic system to a pneumatic roof for the new ‘Milan Gate’ Pavilion at the Malpensa International Airport in Milan, as part of the World Expo 2015. The project features an exceptionally lightweight and transparent roof connecting the terminals to the train station and it radically trans- forms the existing green roof into a fully interactive art space and a sculpture winter garden, offering an extraordinary experi- ence to passengers in transit. AirPix was developed by an international team led by Simone Giostra, the New York- based architect of the GreenPix project in Beijing, including Thetis, an innovative Ital- ian engineering and environmental services firm, and Italian manufacturer Canobbio, world leader in the production and installa- tion of tensile buildings. Structural design for the roof was provided by Form TL. “AirPix represents a critical innovation in the use of energy technology applied to pneumatic structures,” says Simone Giostra, “and it challenges the traditional notion of art pavilion by transforming the architec- ture into an integrated digital medium for unprecedented experimentation and artistic interaction.” www.sgp-architects.com
