Considered as strategically important from an international perspective, Porta Susa station in Turin is a stop for the east-bound Paris-Turin high speed TGV train and forms a key part of a vast plan to revitalise the city. So when the lighting of the station came under review it was felt that only the best cutting edge LED technology was appropri- ate for a project of this scale. Under direction from the client Astaldi, with aesthetic integration from architect Giovanni Bucchimuzzo and led by the re- nowned international installation contrac- tor, Sifel, the station has been entirely re-lit using a total of 60,000 LEDs, making it the first station to be lit entirely using LED technology. The new lighting comprises Aquila Design Neos LED floodlights, both inside and outside the station, as well as an astounding 3,300 metres of specially de- signed linear Astral profiles, that are either recessed in the ceiling or suspended above the platforms. Each 5.5m profile comprises three luminaires, with each made up of 30 x 1.2W LEDs. The profiles also incorporate the stations loudspeaker system and sur-

veillance cameras, as well as three power supplies for general, emergency and safety lighting. Marker lighting along the platforms with amber coloured LEDs ensure safety for the visually impaired.
The access and entrance roads to the sta- tion as well as ‘relaxation areas’ with seats are also illuminated using Aquila Neos 1 and 2 LED luminaires on Tekton columns. The concept will be extended to another transit station, Rebaudengo, where a 2,200 metre linear LED system is planned. The design was focused on three main ob- jectives. Firstly, significant energy savings- found to be 45% less than a comparative metal halide installation, saving 714,000 kWh per year, equivalent to 540 tonnes of CO2. Secondly, with the station ten metres beneath the street it would usually be necessary to close the site for maintenance and repair work resulting in a substantial loss of income. The external canopy of Heathrow Terminal 4 Departures has received a lighting makeover by Pinniger Lighting Consultants using high quality luminaires from Sill Lighting. Lighting requirements for the project de- manded aesthetically pleasing luminaires to sit within the architectural detailing of the forecourt whilst providing a cost effective, efficient lighting solution that complies with all required BAA lighting standards. A prime requirement was to make the luminaires as discrete as possible within the steel and PTFE cushion canopy. The forecourt is lit by 26 x Sill 021 parabolic projectors for 150W HCI-T/WDL lamps complete with rotatable ellipsoid lenses positioned at the leading edge of the canopy with the remote extrud- ed aluminium control gear boxes concealed back within the façade.
The canopy itself is lit by low maintenance and efficient 041 Sill LED spotlights, each with 36 x blue Osram GD+ LEDs. The LED fittings are fitted with honeycomb louvres and anti-glare cowls and are wired for full remote dimming with DMX control. Sill not only provided the luminaires but also the ‘black box’ controls and interconnect
tectural and visual context. The result of these efforts has been described as one of the urban works of our time, a building that successfully combines aesthetics, function and environmental sustainability.

The external canopy of Heathrow Terminal 4 Departures has been transformed by Pinniger using luminaires from Sill Lighting

The lighting design helps create a con- sistent, quality environment by giving architectural definition through the use of high quality and energy efficient lighting. The development uses aesthetic and ambi- ent lighting combined with sustainable low maintenance, high performance fittings, lamps and control equipment.
