FUTURE MUSIC EDUCATORS SEMINAR Lori and Jonathan Lauff, Coordinators

The study of music develops 21st

is a profession that uses critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation on a daily basis. The Future Music Educators Seminar is one of IMEA’s means of helping students statewide understand the demands and delights of becoming a music educator.

Students to Experience Music Education at All-State 2011 Century Skills. Music Education

This fall, music teachers from across Illinois nominated high school students who showed the best potential to pursue a career in music education. These students submitted essays and were then selected by each IMEA District President to represent their region of Illinois at the All-State Conference as a Future Music Educators Seminar participant. At the conference in Peoria, these FMES students will collaborate with other highly motivated students to learn more about the profession and begin communicating with new friends from across the state. These students are the future of music education.

The FMES participants will attend sessions, performances and

rehearsals. They will learn how to watch the events with a new set of eyes, a teacher’s set of eyes. Discussion time will allow students to reflect and react to their experiences. In a round table discussion format, current collegiate MENC members will share their experiences about what life is like as a music education major. Overall, the Seminar includes a variety of experiences and in-depth discussions about the field of music education.

We look forward to working with another outstanding class of FMES students. As evidenced by previous years, there are many incredible students who want to invest their time learning more about the profession, and we look forward to helping reinforce their excitement by experiencing the IMEA All State Conference as a future music educator.

See you in Peoria! Jonathan and Lori Lauff
