CHORUS DIVISION Richard Murphy, Vice President

Music is a 21st Century Skill

As you will probably recognize, the above title is the theme for the 2011 IMEA All-State Conference. In keeping with the theme for this year, several articles in the Fall 2010 edition of the IMEA Journal were also dedicated to this very important topic. As I pointed out in my Fall article, 21st

Century Skills: “A New Vision for

Education” is potentially a very important initiative, and it is in the best interest of music educators to keep informed regard- ing the direction of this project.

In addition to concentrating on the 21st Century Skill project, music (and allied arts) educators continue to face financial hardships. Tese hardships are caused by a combination of things: the current recession, the lack of an equitable funding source for public education in the State of Illinois, and our constant battle regarding advocating for a “place at the table” when it comes to discussions regarding curriculum in our schools (both public and private).

Although at times the task at hand seems insurmountable, I remain optimistic and I am confident that we are making progress. Music is truly a 21st

Century

Skill . . . as a matter of fact, it is a skill for all centuries!

I wish you all the best for the closing of the fall semester and I hope that you have a peaceful and prosperous holiday season. I hope to see you in Peoria in January of 2011 for what promises to be another outstanding IMEA All- State Conference!
