tions, dynamics, phrasing, tuning, balance, interpretation. I see theoretical discussion on tempered tuning, the over tone series, intervals, chords, leading to composition and improvisation. I hear comparisons between the music of Bach and Lady GaGa, between Gregorian chant and Philip Glass, and between Miles Davis and Katy Perry.
Te one road block that I see, at least in my own teaching, is that over the years I have put aside all these other aspects of music and focused primarily on band performance. When do I find time to expand my teaching to all these other aspects of the art form I love? Well with the help of my school and my colleagues, I think I’m on the move. Our school has embraced the Professional Learning Community (PLCs) concept. Right now we are taking apart our music curriculum and re-constructing it, not just at the high school, but with the input of our middle school music faculty as well. What do we want our student to know and be able to do when they leave us? It goes far beyond just performance. We want to expand into more composition and improvisation, aspects of world mu- sic and ethno-musicology, and more use of technology and music. I have made reference to Dr. Charles Leonhard, my graduate advisor, in my articles of the past (IME Winter 2008). I feel I need to give him a degree of credit at this time. Discussion of the greater scope of music beyond the performance aspect was a frequent topic with Dr. Leonhard and my classmates in the 1970’s and 80’s. He believed that jazz and improvisation, music composition and world musics would be the future of music education. I wish I had been paying closer attention.
Open Invitation
I hope this winter journal finds you warm and happy in your position shaping the lives of young musicians. In just a few weeks we will meet again at our All State conference. It is shaping up to be an out- standing conference and possibly one of the best ever. We hope to see you there.
