Celebrate Music in Illinois

Arts Alliance Illinois’ annual gala, held November 3, 2010 in Chicago, had as its theme “Celebrate Music in Illinois.” An awardee that night was Orbert Davis, co- founder and artistic director of the Jazz Philharmonic, acclaimed trumpeter, composer, arranger, and conductor. Also recognized were Joan W. Harris, for her tremendous leadership in arts and culture in Chicago and statewide, and WFMT, 98.7, for its 60 years of presenting the best of classical music and other fine arts programming to Chicago, the state of Illinois, and beyond.

Illinois Joins a National Dialogue about Arts Education

What do the state superintendent of Illinois public schools, an award-winning artist, an engineer/graduate school dean, the president of the nation’s oldest music festival, and one of the most respected philanthropic leaders in the nation have in common? Tey were all members of a 6-person team that convened in Chicago on July 26-28, 2010 to talk about the future of arts education as part of the annual Education Leaders Institute (ELI).

ELI, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, brings together policymakers, educators, advocates, and artists for a 3-day session of discussion, debate, and strategizing about how to strengthen arts education in their home states. Illinois fielded one of the most diverse teams to participate in the Education Leaders Institute to date.

Joining our state were teams from New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, and Washington. Tis was the fifth Institute to take place since 2007 when the NEA launched the initiative. Te NEA works with the Illinois Arts Council and the Illinois Humanities Council to implement the Institute.

For states to participate in ELI, they must prepare and submit a formal proposal and be selected from among other state applicants. Arts Alliance Illinois helped lead Illinois’ ELI proposal-writing process as well as the selection of Illinois ELI team, whose members benefitted from Alliance preparations for the ELI gathering.

At the foundation of the Illinois team’s work at the Education Leaders Institute was a belief that the arts are essential for students to develop 21st century skills and to become innovative, creative, and successful citizens.

Illinois is one of 15 P21 leadership states, making P21 a window of opportunity for advocacy–a window opened by Illinois-based arts education advocates working with the Illinois Consortium for 21st Century Skills. But how can Illinois ensure every child receives a well-

rounded education that includes the arts–specially in light of challenges like a looming $13-billion budget deficit in Springfield and chronic disparities between Illinois’ urban, suburban, and rural regions? Addressing these questions, in part, by building on and leveraging the Education Leaders Institute, is a top priority of Arts Alliance Illinois. Available now at www.artsalliance.org is Committing to Quality in Education: Arts at the Core, a resource to help educators to create an arts education plan and turn it into official policy at school and district levels.
