EDITOR’S CORNER What Do You Teach?
I have long been a fan of the Harry Chapin song “Flowers are Red.” If you don’t know this anthem about creativity in education you can watch a video of a performance here: http://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=1y5t-dAa6UA
Harry said “Tis song was triggered by a report card my secretary’s kid got which said ‘Your son marches to the beat of a different drummer. But, don’t worry, we’ll have him joining the parade by the end of the term!’”
Te little boy went first day of school He got some crayons and started to draw. He put colors all over the paper For colors was what he saw. And the teacher said, ‘What you doin’ young man,’ ‘I’m paintin’ flowers,’ he said. She said . . . ‘It’s not the time for art young man And anyway flowers are green and red. Tere’s a time for everything young man And a way it should be done. You’ve got to show concern for everyone else For you’re not the only one!’
Is your teaching limiting creativity? In a tribute to the late Paul Manz, who was an organist, composer and renown teacher, Larry Ellis wrote (used with permission):
He sat beside me on the bench as I played my composition. His remark to me (and the entire class) was, “Larry, you were a bit dangerous on your progression; let’s see if we can make it even more dangerous!” We all laughed and he took the piece to a new level of creativity. Such was so typical of the great Dr. Paul Manz!
Ives’ father, George, rigged a contrivance (24 violin strings spread across a clothespress) that produced quarter tones and was determined to stretch his son’s musical ear. He also had Charles sing Swanee River in the key of E-flat while he accompanied in the key of C. Have you ever played a simple three chord accompaniment in the left hand and a folk melody in another key in the right hand for your class?
What do you teach? Can you take a piece to “a new level of creativity” to make it even “more dangerous?” Are you “stretch- ing your students musical ears” to foster the 21st Century Skill– Creativity in your classroom?
Tere are so many colors in the rainbow So many colors in the morning sun So many colors in the flower and I see every one.
