All-State Orchestra


Steven Amundson is in his 29th year on the faculty of St. Olaf College where he is Profes- sor of Music and Conductor of the St. Olaf Orchestra. He served as the Music Director of the Tacoma Youth Symphony before his arrival to Minnesota in 1981 and was the Music Di- rector and Conductor of the Bloomington (MN) Symphony from 1984–1997. In addition to guest conducting many of this country’s All-State orchestras, Amundson has been a guest conductor for the Interlochen National Arts Camp and several professional orchestras in- cluding the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.


A 1977 graduate of Luther College, Amundson obtained the Master of Music degree in or- chestral conducting from Northwestern University, and did further studies at the Univer- sity of Virginia, the Aspen Music School and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. In the 1980 International Conducting Competition hosted by the Mozarteum and Austrian Na- tional Radio, Amundson won the first (Hans Häring) prize. In 1992, the Minnesota Music Education Association named him “Orchestra Educator of the Year.”


All-State Chorus


Robert A. Boyd is currently Lecturer in Music Education at the Bienen School of Music of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, specializing in secondary choral education. Bob taught choral music and music theory for thirty-three years at Lyons Township High School in La Grange and Western Springs, IL. From 1991-97 he served as Choral Division Vice-President of the Illinois Music Educators Association. Mr. Boyd was the first conductor of IMEA’s Music Educator’s Day at the Capitol, held in the Capitol Rotunda in Springfield. In 2003, the National Federation Interscholastic Music Association named Bob as the Out- standing Music Educator of Illinois, the first Illinois choral director to be so honored.


In addition, he has served the Illinois Chapter of the American Choral Directors Associa- tion in various capacities, and is currently Historian of the organization. Bob concurrently is Male Chorus Repertoire and Standards Chair for the Central Division of ACDA. In July of 2006, Boyd was honored by the Illinois chapter of ACDA with the Harold A. Decker Award for career choral excellence.


All-State Band


Donald W. Shupe received his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University in 1973 and his master’s degree from Northwestern in 1974. He served as the Director of Bands at Libertyville High School from1974 until 2010.


Mr. Shupe is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, Phi Beta Mu, and the American Bandmasters Association. In March of 1995, Mr. Shupe was honored as “Educa- tor of the Month” and in June of 1995, he received the Chicagoland Music Educator Award sponsored by Quinlan and Fabish Music Company. In 1998 he was voted the “Mr. Holland’s Opus Award” sponsored by Bob Rogers Travel. He was honored as the “Educator of the Year” for the 2001 - 2002 school year by the Libertyville High School Student Council. In 2008 Shupe received the Outstanding Bandmaster Award from Phi Beta Mu professional Music Fraternity. In 2010 he was inducted into the Phi Beta Mu Hall of Fame. Upon his re- tirement, he was honored with The John Paynter Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Quinlan and Fabish Music Company.
