a previous speaker. He has also spoken at many other functions that our members have attended and as a result they have raised money and contributed to the charitable funds of Age Concern.
ike explained a thorough researched story regarding the statistics of our borough
and the impact we can expect in the near future with our increasingly aged population. It was surprising to learn that over the next 15 years the number of 50+ year old persons will double. There is expected to be many more elderly people with dementia which is currently escalating at an alarming rate. presenting a cheque for £2,000 to Nadia van Woerkom of Little Havens Children's Hospice.
family carers will be needed, something that Havering Council needs to prepare for. Mike thanked our club for its efforts in The Bottle in the Fridge scheme. Age Concern has distributed over 200 bottles and Mike could confirm that at least 20 bottles had been used in „life and death‟ situations.

t was explained that many programmes for the aged are underway, far too many to be listed
in the short time available. The few that were mentioned included free home fire risk assessments and alarms for the over 60‟s, a nurse to visit the home for blood pressure checks and day care trips out to the community.

unding is a problem with the many schemes underway. Age Concern insurance was an option
that was discussed as a way to help with funding. Mike invited all those present to ask for a quote, and assured us that we be dealt with by „no pressure‟ sales consultants who would give good advice.
