“There is no mystery to back pain,” says Dr. Steven Paredes, a chi- ropractor and founder of the Solana Beach Health Center. “For the majority of my patients, it boils down to being disconnected from the body and ignoring ongoing stress and pain, which are the body’s way of communicating to us.” Unfortunately, Paredes explains, the back gives de-
layed feedback, initially at a level that can be ignored. With no graduated incline in intensity, consistent pain is followed by emergency pain and dysfunction. “When patients are in a state of trauma, 80 percent of the time it is a culmination of conditions that are all related to lifestyle or a congenital abnormality,” advises Paredes, who offers several helpful suggestions for avoiding painful back episodes.
Rest is underestimated. “When you consider

how much time we spend working, playing and taking care of all of the mundane necessities of life, compared to the time we spend resting and/or rejuvenating, both physically and mentally, there is an enormous imbalance,” says Parades, who adds that taking the time to do something relaxing and joyful is underestimated. Sometimes, doing nothing and resting can be restorative for the back.
Schedule regular massages. Massage tech-
niques such as deep tissue, sports, Swedish, Lomi Lomi, Thai, shiatsu and trigger point are helpful in both the treatment and prevention of back pain.
Schedule regular acupuncture, chiro-
practic and physical therapy sessions. Taking proactive and preventive measures can mean avoid- ing painful back episodes.
Develop body awareness. Of all the many
techniques available to us for back care, the most important is body awareness, which is a simple con- nection to knowing how you feel. “This connection is vital to avoiding all diseases, including back pain,” emphasizes Paredes, who cautions that too frequently, we becomes so distracted and overly stressed by our busy lives that we forget to notice what’s happening to our body.
Consider pain a friend. “Do not ignore pain just because
you can tolerate it,” cautions Paredes. “Pain is your friend and the body’s way of giving you feedback information, a status report of what’s going on. Acknowledge pain, respect it, and seek the knowledge necessary to change it via a health practitioner who can guide you,” he suggests. “Know that the body is dynamic and modifiable, and that we have the ability to change our health when we consciously lead a more balanced life.”
