San Diego Fluoridation Update

by Carey O’Rielly, DDS I

n August, we highlighted the funding of fluoridated water in

San Diego, despite a ban that has been in effect since 1954. The current push to fluoridate by November 2010 is suppos- edly an outgrowth of a new state law, although a supervisor at the California Department of Consumer Affairs informed our office that the state does not have the right to override local ordinances. The funding necessary to fluoridate has come from First

5, which taxes tobacco and passes on the revenue to im- prove the lives of children younger than 5. This is exactly the age group that could receive too much fluoride, as infants may receive formulas prepared with tap water, and children often drink from public fountains. There will be no way to monitor this, or how much fluo-

ride children are receiving from other sources, such as fruit juices prepared with fluoridated water. Fluoride is difficult to remove, and water filters that remove it are costly. A fairly balanced article by Mike Lee that appeared in

The San Diego Union Tribune on September 9, 2010 (“$3.2 Million Fluoride System May End Up Unused”) does not mention that recent studies, such as a 2004 Australian report, indicate that there no longer is a difference in dental decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas. Or that the substance used is not in fact fluoride, but hydrofluosilli- cic acid, which has never undergone FDA testing or received its approval. It is very expensive to create a system of pipes that do not corrode from the etching properties of fluoride, and the article reports that efforts to fluoridate this year may actually run out of funds, which has usually been the case. Let us hope this is what happens once again, even though it is sad to think of the $3.2 million dollars that have been wasted and could have been used to really improve the lives of young children.

To Stay Healthy, Stay Hydrated

by Stacey Smith Bacon T

he human body is about 60 percent water by weight, and staying properly

hydrated by consuming enough water is vital for well-being and a healthy appearance. Water carries nutrients to the cells, plumps up the skin, flushes out toxins and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues. Every system in your body depends upon this life- giving elixir. However, we all lose water daily through

normal body functions, including breathing and perspiring, and even mild dehydration can drain our energy and leave us feeling tired. Studies conducted by researchers from the Department of Medicine at the University of Cam- bridge indicate that chronic dehydration can lead to head- aches, joint pain, fatigue, sleeplessness, weight gain, uneven skin tone and premature wrinkles.

Experts also agree that thirst alone is not a reliable guide

for when to drink. By the time you experience thirst, you may already be slightly dehydrated. Make drinking enough water one of your top healthy

habits. According to the Mayo Clinic, most doctors recom- mend a daily intake of eight to nine cups. To avoid becom- ing dehydrated, it’s important to factor in activity levels and weather conditions. Drink extra water when engaging in vigorous exercise or physical activity that leads to perspira- tion, and when the weather is hot and humid.
