Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Essential Nutrients for Health T
he typical American diet is danger- ously deficient in the rich omega-3 fatty acids (EFAs) found in fish and krill oil and toxic in the unhealthy forms of omega-6 EFAs, such as those found in heat-treated deep frying oils. While the ideal EFA ratio should hover around 2:1 of ome- ga-6 to omega-3, the average U.S. diet is somewhere between 15 to 22:1. This imbalance can have serious health consequences.
According to a study by Purdue
University, hyperactivity, learning dis- orders and behavioral problems were among the adverse effects exhibited in children low in omega-3 EFAs. Other conditions, including dyslexia, depres- sion, memory problems, weight gain, cancer, heart disease, eczema, allergies, inflammatory diseases, arthritis and dia- betes have also been linked to omega-3 deficiency.
While the side effects of a diet
low in omega-3 fatty acids are daunt- ing, the solution is simple: Eat a diet rich in these nutritious oils. Omega-3s occur naturally in fish oil and organic, free-range, grass-fed meats and poultry. In addition to eating a healthy diet, including a high-quality, pure fish oil supplement with the proper ratio of DHA and EPA omega-3’s will help en- sure that the body receives an adequate amount of these beneficial fatty acids.
