give her a break from the monthly task, I am grateful for the opportunity to recall how my stay began with a great massage from Pam Daugherty. The lomi lomi massage and pulsed electromagnetic therapy were so relaxing that my mind slowed down to a near stop, something it rarely does, except when I meditate. My two-day visit at Two Bunch Palms, in Desert Springs, with Elaine and Assistant Publisher Julie Hollingsworth, was sheer ecstasy. The beauty and serenity of the resort’s natural environment are rivaled only by the scrumptious cuisine and healing power of the mineral pools, where I experienced a Watsu water massage that no words can adequately describe.
A All the excitement I needed surfaced during my
very first kayak trip. Paddling on San Diego Bay with Marie Humphrey, owner of the Family Kayak Adventure Center, provided just-close-enough views of marine wildlife and the tall ships sailing in and out of the harbor during the Festival of Sails. The perfect complement to a day on the water was my luxurious facial at Skin Fitness, Etc., where Certified Organic Esthetician and owner Charlene Handel revjuvenated my looks and my psyche. Getting out from behind my computer to connect with champions of sustain- ability in 13 cities between San Diego and Spartanburg, South Carolina, during my Stone Soup Listening Tour with my Stone Soup Sister, Sharon Joy, has been beyond inspiring. Listening to heartwarming stories about what these innovative individu- als are doing to build sustainable communities has led me to the same conclusion reached by Bill McKibben, author of this month’s feature. Because what we put our attention on grows, let’s stop directing our focus to things that are wrong with the world and instead, place it on the actions of Climate Heroes, who need our support to create a more sustainable future. We will be wisely investing our pre- cious thoughts, time and energy into growing this grassroots movement that can benefit everyone and the planet.
I applaud San Diego Climate Heroes such as Peter Zahn, chairman of the board of San Diego’s Green Chamber, who has been working tirelessly to intro- duce all businesses to the green revolution; James French, owner of Coast Home Building Services, who encourages homeowners to take advantage of green tax incentives that reduce energy bills; Kent Horner, owner of C & H Gardens, who designs and installs water-saving, artistic landscapes; and Lorenzo Diaz, whose grassroots H2O Trash Patrol initiative helps clean up San Diego’s beaches. You can meet all of them in this month’s issue. A sweet highlight of my time here was my birthday celebration with my
brother, Jim, his son and fiancé, and Elaine and her husband Jack. Its unforgettable prelude was my soul-soothing afternoon with Dr. Carolle Jean-Murat at her well- ness center, here in San Diego. I’m sure the beauty of her gardens added years to my life, as did the bounty of joy I experienced with innkeepers Liz and Carol at the Kate Stanton Inn, a comfortably cozy bed-and-breakfast in Encinitas. If you can’t make it to Two Bunch, be sure to check into the inn, where you’ll enter as strang- ers and leave as friends.
Here’s to wonderful memories and a bright future ahead! Linda Sechrist
