movement to clean up San Diego’s shoreline. Diaz’s family mission now has a name, H2O Trash Patrol, and a website: H2OTrashPatrol.com. Not one for pomp and circumstance, Diaz refuses to schedule trash pickup days. He says, “We don’t plan our pickups or set dates. We just do it.” While some may consider this lack of organization detrimental, it seems to be working. “When we are at the beach picking up trash, we will notice that other people start to pick up, too,” Diaz points out. “They’ll even approach us and ask if they can put their trash in our buckets.” Cleaning up, it seems, is contagious.


Diaz has become an inspiration to his friends and fellow beachgoers. He says, “All of a sudden, others are report- ing to me. People come up to me all the time to tell me about the trash they picked up on any given day.” While Diaz respects the difference that large, organized cleanups make, he wants to get rid of the idea that clean- ing up the beach must be a massive effort that is scheduled and put on the calendar. He says, “A lot of people like leaving the beach cleanup to the or- ganizations, but when we do it on our own, without waiting for others, it can really have an impact.”


Diaz is not seeking recognition or


even acknowledgment from anyone. He just wants to make sure his children can enjoy clean sand and water. He sums up his simple but effective strategy in 10 short words: “We don’t beat our chests. We just pick up trash.”
