Fab actually delivers the end product – if the client so chooses. Job orders are flexible and can consist of one step or multiple steps, all depending on the customers’ needs. With 45 pieces of tried-and-true equipment, the subsidiary specializes in machining, welding, bending and rolling in a 12,000-square-foot facility, built just steps away from its affiliation. “We have everything here,” Simon said. “We pretty


much can do it all in-house, which is unusual.” Typically, there are specific machine shops or welding shops that customers must seek to finish a job, but at Metal Fab, the services are all-inclusive. “Between Tarco Steel supply- ing the material and Metal Fab supplying the fabrication needs, it’s a one-stop shop. A customer can call up and order his material [at Tarco Steel] and say ‘I need this bent,’ then ship it over to Metal Fab – all in one phone call. He doesn’t have to make several phone calls or make several trips. “We have a wide variety of things we can do, with a


wide variety of equipment – and in heavier capacity than most shops.” Simon added. The company can complete jobs large or small. “Small jobs can be completed the same day; larger jobs can run anywhere from three days to two weeks.” The majority of the work at Metal Fab is bending or rolling with brakes and rolls that can handle plate up to ½” thick.


Precision machining services include milling, line boring, lathe turning, drilling and keyway cutting – all techniques used to make or fix the parts customers need. Welding services, for the heaviest steel to the most deli- cate stainless and aluminum, include MIG welding, TIG welding, Arc welding, and hard facing. Metal Fab also welds T-1 and wear plate for long lasting repair jobs. Past Metal Fab fabrication jobs have included liners for bulldozer blades, backhoe and excavator buckets, and chute liners; frame rails and cross members for trucks, trailers and heavy equipment; and custom parts bent to fit dump bodies, sand spreaders, and snowplows. “I consider most of our projects as one-off items,” Si-


mon said, which means, “it’s not a repetitious item that you would make over and over for years. It’s a one-off, for example, garbage cans. The client may need 500 but once the project is done, that’s it. We are a job shop. ” Current jobs include working on projects in the solar industry and making parts for a federal prison. “We’ve repaired tanks for people, we can bend channels for trucks and we have fabricated railings for universities, nursing homes and horse tracks,” said Beal, clarifying that the company is not a structural fabricator, which is a common misconception. An advantage that Metal Fab has over competitors is its use of manual equipment. The pieces are older, yet
