Located on the banks of the River Ribble, an excellent salmon and sea trout river, ( but has also returned good course catches of chub, barbell and roach, not that we’re into fishing,) Clitheroe makes an excellent base for exploring the nearby Pendle Hill and the picturesque Forest of Bowland. A walk up Pendle Hill, a site steeped in history of witchcraft, will reward visitors with views as far as Blackpool tower and the Irish Sea. ( You can get close to the top by car if you take the Sabden road off the A59.) Another idea for a day out would be to turn left in Waddington and have a look round Backridge Farm before going on to Bashall Barn, both shopping experiences. Then pop back in to Waddington for a spot of lunch before heading over Waddington fell, through the Trough of Bowland for some of the most spectacular scenery in Lancashire. You do come out in Lancaster but you could have a look at the Butterfly place at the Ashton memorial.


C l i t h e r o e a n d t h e surrounding villages have many hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation should you want to experience the nightlife and make a weekend of it.
