Clitheroe actually dates back to Saxon times, so by the time the imposing 12th century Norman Castle that towers over the town had been built, Clitheroe had already been around for nearly 1,000 years! Clitheroe Castle, said to be the smallest Norman castle/keep in England, is certainly one of the oldest buildings in Lancashire, is now home to a fascinating Museum and 16 acres of landscaped gardens. It houses attractions appealing to every age group, including a b a n d s t a n d , c h i l d r e n ’ s playground, skate-park and Lancashire’s first Labyrinth. The Rose Garden also features quirky metal and limestone sculptures. From the castle you can experience fantastic views of the town and surrounding area, have a coffee and a cake in the restaurant before descending to explore one of the best shopping experiences in Lancashire.
